Badger Bytes is a newsletter for alumni, donors, and friends of the CS department that comes out monthly during the academic year.

This issue we're focusing on all things robotics! Learn about the UW-Madison CS research, students, and alumni who are pushing robotics forward through their work.

Robotics research:
To Assistant Professor Josiah Hanna, the world is like soccer:
dynamic, fast paced, and there’s too much going on to process everything at once. He says that the same is true of soccer, and teaching robots to play the game can help train intelligent robots of the future.

This is part one in a three-part robotics research series. Look for more stories in the coming months!
Students in robotics:
CS student Manis Joshi x'28 is trying to make robots easier for humans to interact with,
saying "I’d really like to be a part of something that can help make an impact." Read the full story about his participation in the L&S LASER program and his excitement around robotics being used to assist humans in real-life contexts here.

Students in the People & Robots Lab have made significant contributions to the field this year
through their published research. Their work explores topics from telepresence and place attachment to intergenerational connection and innovative research methodologies in human-robot interaction. See the full list of their published papers here.

Alumni in robotics:

David Khachatryan '22 is proving that the best technology puts people first.
From competitive chess to robotics engineering to co-creating a Chicago transit app for riders with disabilities, Khachatryan uses strategic thinking to solve real-world challenges.

William Jen '18 builds the essential infrastructure that makes humanoid robots work.
From Wisconsin Robotics at UW-Madison to engineering critical robotics systems, he's turned his passion for software that impacts the physical world into a career at the cutting edge of robotics.
