Hello CS alumni and friends! We’re trying something new with Badger Bytes. Instead of longer updates three times per year, you’ll now receive a streamlined edition each month while classes are in session— bringing you more frequent news about the exciting things happening in the department.

Our first issue highlights Morgridge Hall, which became our new home in mid-August. We’re thrilled to open the doors of this grand space, and we hope you’ll join us in celebrating. You can explore the lineup of grand opening events here!

Welcome to the September 2025 edition of Badger Bytes!

It is my honor to take on the responsibility of Chair of the Computer Sciences Department this year. My sincere thanks to Steve Wright, who made significant contributions to the department as chair over the past two years. As we begin this semester, I feel a great deal of excitement. We have moved into a stunning new building - Morgridge Hall - the new jewel of the campus - which will facilitate groundbreaking discoveries and serve the needs of students from across campus. We welcome six fantastic new assistant professors who broaden and enrich the department. We also have a tremendously accomplished and knowledgeable leadership group, who I am eager to work with over the coming weeks and months. While we face certain headwinds in terms of funding uncertainty, I am reminded of the quote from Albert Einstein: "In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity." Our CS team will be working hard to identify and take advantage of those opportunities. I look forward to reporting our progress in future editions of Badger Bytes.

A sign to climb: Celebrating the opening of UW’s Morgridge Hall

Morgridge Hall was filled with celebration on Friday as the ribbon-cutting ceremony officially opened the building. “There’s a certain electricity in the air today. It’s because this building is something of a public promise for the tools shaping tomorrow,” UW-Madison Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin said.

CDIS community bids fond farewell to their home buildings

From late-night study sessions to milestone achievements, 1210 W. Dayton Street has been home to countless memories. As we transition to our next chapter, we’re collecting stories from our community. Add your memory and help us celebrate the place we shared for so many years.
