The Year's Top Stories:
The opening of Morgridge Hall — the new home of Computer Sciences — is a top story of the year, as the $267 million state-of-the-art research and learning hub brings together cutting-edge labs, collaborative spaces, and interdisciplinary teams to drive innovation.
Professor Somesh Jha's DARPA grant was our most-read story of the year, highlighting his team’s work to make older software safer by automatically updating it to modern, more secure programming languages.
Another popular topic this year was our new faculty — experts in robotics, AI, quantum computing, programming languages, and optimization from institutions like MIT, Carnegie Mellon, and Boston University—who bring fresh energy and diverse expertise to the department.
Assistant Professor Josiah Hanna drew wide interest with his research on using reinforcement learning to train robots to make decisions in dynamic environments like robot soccer.
One of the winningest teams at UW–Madison isn’t a sports team. It’s the ICPC competitive programming team, whose 25-year-long record of national and international success, coached by Professor Dieter van Melkebeek, reflects the depth of talent in Computer Sciences.

Looking Ahead to 2026:
The UW Board of Regents approved a proposal to create the College of Computing and Artificial Intelligence (CAI). This is just the first step: Stay tuned for more on the new college in the coming months!
