WORKSHOPS AND TRAININGS

Introduction to R

May 9, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., The Social Science Computing Cooperative will be hosting a workshop on the basics of the programming language R. Participants can expect a quick introduction to the basics of R using RStudio as well as:
  • An overview of the user interface
  • Running scripts and evaluating expressions
  • Data objects, and functions
  • Saving your work
  • Using help/learning more
For more information and to register, visit the Introduction to R workshop webpage.

Health Sciences Data Carpentry

May 15-18, 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., The Data Science Hub will be hosting a workshop during the month of May. Data Carpentry develops and teaches workshops on the fundamental data skills needed to conduct research. Its target audience is researchers who have little to no prior computational experience, and its lessons are domain specific, building on learners' existing knowledge to enable them to quickly apply skills learned to their own research. Participants will be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems. For more information and to register, visit the Health Sciences Data Carpentry workshop page.

Have questions about anything data science-related? Come see the Data Science Hub facilitators at Coding Meetup on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-4:30 p.m. CT. To join Coding Meetup, join data-science-hubgroup.slack.com.

SEMINARS AND EVENTS

End-to-End Workflows with Posit Team

April 26, 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., During the session, the Posit team will walk through an end-to-end data science workflow and demo the core functionality of Posit Team while highlighting some of the latest features! While each session's content will vary slightly, here are a few core topics that will addressed each month:
  • Open Source Analytics: The future of data science is open source. We'll discuss methods for leveraging open-source tools and packages in a secure and scalable way!
  • Deployment: How to share the amazing data science assets your Team has built, including web applications, machine learning models, APIs, and more!
  • Data Access: Data comes in various forms and is stored in various ways. We'll discuss best practices for accessing, reading, and writing data!
  • Job Scheduling: Do you have recurring data science jobs? We'll show you how to automate these processes using Posit Connect.
The monthly session will live streamed on YouTube Premiere. For more information, visit the Monthly Demos calendar invite.

SILO Seminar Series

Wednesdays, 12:30 p.m., SILO is about breaking down the systems, information, leaning, and optimization of research created by academic department boundaries. Recent advances in information science are allowing scientists and researchers to sense, process and share data in ways and scales previously impossible. These developments have the potential to benefit work happening in a wide range of disciplines. SILO’s purpose is to help realize such potential by providing the time and space for researchers to present and interact to find common threads. Visit the SILO webpage for information about their upcoming talks.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Chat GPT and the Mind

April 20, 6:00 p.m., Mosse Humanities Building, Room 2650, Wisconsin AI Safety Initiative (WAISI) is hosting Dr. Gary Lupyan — cognitive scientist and UW professor of psychology — to discuss what the successes (and failures) of generative AI can tell us about the human mind, intelligence, and possible futures of human-machine interaction. Those wishing to attend must RSVP via this Google Form.

Tech Evolution in Early Stages of a Startup

April 26, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Madison Public Library - Central, This presentation will cover practices that have been conducted at Fetch when they had limited runway and a completely different set of engineers. Startups are not fortunate to have the budgets that other companies may have, so how can workers best capitalize on the resources that they do have and ensure the company can scale. This event will feature Heidi Wagner, who is currently the VP of GSD and have been with Fetch for 8.5 years. For more information, visit the Tech Evolution calendar invite.

JOBS AND OPPORTUNITIES

STUDENT

Geospatial Data Science Talk hosted by dotData

April 19, 6:00 p.m., Computer Sciences 1240, dotData will be hosting a talk on "Exploring the World of Geospatial Data Science," featuring Professor Song Gao, Department of Geography, Faculty Affiliates of Data Science Institute, UW-Madison.

Abstract: Geospatial data about the Earth environment and society are captured by millions of environmental and human sensors in a variety of formats such as remote sensing imageries, crowdsourced maps, geotagged videos and photos, transportation smart card transactions, mobile phone data, social media content, and GPS trajectories. In this mini-workshop/presentation, I will share the popular geospatial data formats and general workflow for collecting, processing, analyzing, and visualizing geospatial datasets using open-source Python packages.
