HEI and HAQAST Early Career Health and Atmospheric Science Workshop!
We will be offering a pre-meeting workshop in partnership with the Health Effects Institute on June 3, 2024. It is geared toward early career researchers in atmospheric science and remote sensing interested in building connections and creating health-relevant research proposals. We will cover some of the key challenges in using satellite data for health applications, ways people overcome these challenges, and opportunities for funding and collaboration. Read more on our website and see the workshop agenda here.

HAQAST News

  • Quantifying Prescribed-Fire Smoke Exposure Using Low-Cost Sensors and Satellites: Springtime Burning in Eastern Kansas. This new paper from lead author Olivia Sablan and others from the Fused Earth Observations to Quantify Health Impacts from Agricultural Fires Tiger Team assesses how prescribed burns in the Flint Hills affected PM2.5
  • One Thing Most Countries Have in Common: Unsafe Air: HAQAST researcher Gaige Kerr was quoted, and the Satellite Data for Environmental Justice research was featured in this New York Times article. It discusses global air pollution, disparities in the US, and future perspectives. Read the research paper here, or watch a video of Kerr discussing the findings here.
  • Faces of Technology – Women of NASA 2024:To celebrate National Women’s Day, NASA looked back on the Faces of Technology series. This video compilation included clips from three members of HAQAST projects: Amber Soja, Emily Gargulinski, and Kellin Slater.
  • Geostationary satellites could provide better air quality alerts: study Susan Anenberg alongside researchers from GW, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency released a new study to demonstrate public health value of geostationary satellites for air pollution monitoring.

Data

*New* HAQAST Dataset Available - Gridded TROPOMI NO2 Data Available for Download
Gridded 1 x 1 km monthly, seasonal, and annual satellite TROPOMI NO2 data is now available for download on the NASA portal. The dates range from May 2018-present and the area is the continental US.

Preliminary TEMPO Data Now Available
Want to start working with TEMPO data, learn about the file formats, and content? Three weeks of preliminary, unvalidated data are now available through NASA Earthdata Search. This initial release is intended only for users to gain familiarity with file format and content, not for publications or presentations. More Level 2 and 3 data are expected to be released later this month.

Call for Manuscripts

  • The Remote Sensing journal seeks manuscripts on the topic, Integrating Remote Sensing and GIS in Environmental Health Assessment, by June 30. Find more information here.
  • Call for papers - Wildland Fires: Emissions, Chemistry, Contamination, Climate, and Human Health. This joint Virtual Special Issue from Environmental Science & Technology (ES&T), Environmental Science & Technology (ES&T) Letters, and ACS ES&T Air aims to feature a broad range of contributions on all aspects of the environmental impacts of wildland fires. Deadline for submissions is September 2. More information here.
