HEI and HAQAST Early Career Health and Atmospheric Science Workshop!
We will be offering a pre-meeting workshop in partnership with the Health Effects Institute on June 3, 2024. It is geared toward early career researchers in atmospheric science and remote sensing interested in building connections and creating health-relevant research proposals. We will cover some of the key challenges in using satellite data for health applications, ways people overcome these challenges, and opportunities for funding and collaboration. Read more on our website and see the workshop agenda here.

HAQAST News
New HAQAST Rapid Response Projects Selected
Rapid Response Teams are a HAQAST initiative that work to solve health and air quality issues that require urgent attention. These collaborations between HAQAST members and public stakeholders leverage NASA data and products to solve pressing issues on year long time scales or less. We are excited two announce two new projects:
- New Toolbox to Support US States in Exceptional Event Screening for Wildland and Prescribed Fires, led by Tracey Holloway
- Collaborating with the Public Health/Air Quality on the Combined PM2.5 and Extreme Heat Exposures, led by Chris Uejio
Department of State Announces New Air Pollution Forecasting App
The Department of State's Office of Management Strategy & Solutions’ Greening Diplomacy Initiative announced a new, machine learning-powered particulate air pollution forecast is now available in the ZephAir web version for all cities that host a U.S. diplomatic mission worldwide. This forecast was developed in partnership with NASA HAQAST with PI Pawan Gupta, using machine learning, satellite data, and data from the Department’s air quality monitors at 75 embassies and consulates. You can access the app here, and read more here.
Mapping NO2 Pollution and Sources
Using satellite data and warehouse data provided by NASA HAQAST, the Lake Michigan Air Directors Consortium (LADCO) is hosting an interactive map to view ambient NO 2 concentration data at the census tract level, industrial and energy NOx emissions sources, and warehouses (see thumbnail below). Read more and access the map here.

Data
HAQAST Dataset Available - Gridded TROPOMI NO2 Data Available for Download
Gridded 1 x 1 km monthly, seasonal, and annual satellite TROPOMI NO2 data is available for download on the NASA portal. The dates range from May 2018-present and the area is the continental US.
Preliminary TEMPO Data Now Available
Want to start working with TEMPO data, learn about the file formats, and content? Three weeks of preliminary, unvalidated data are available through NASA Earthdata Search. This initial release is intended only for users to gain familiarity with file format and content, not for publications or presentations. More Level 2 and 3 data are expected to be released May 20th. A NASA Earthdata webinar will be held on May 29 at 2pm EDT for an introduction to the TEMPO mission, data products, services, and tools. Check out this link to register.

Funding Opportunities
- NASA - NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD) announced the release of its annual omnibus solicitation for basic and applied research, Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Science (ROSES) 2024 with 100 different proposal opportunities. These opportunities include the next generation of NASA HAQAST, and other Health and Air Quality announcements. Find out more here.
Do you have ideas for the next generation HAQAST? Are there data needs at your organization that satellite data might address? Contribute project ideas to the NASA HAQAST forum here.
- EPA - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is seeking applications proposing community-engaged research in underserved communities to advance the use of air pollution data and communication of air quality information for empowering local decisions and actions that address community-identified air pollution concerns. More information here. Deadline June 26th.
- ESIP Lab Request for Proposals - This solicitation seeks proposals that improve the technical capacity of communities to support climate resilience efforts. Read the request for proposals here, and view previously funded examples here. Deadline June 17th.
