The nation's substance use epidemic touches us all, including the business community. Employers have jobs to fill but hesitate to hire workers with a drug-use history. Workers recovering from addiction want to work but aren't given the chance. Other workers might be addicted, but go undetected, putting workplace safety at risk.

What is the importance of providing fentanyl test strip education to youth?
We’ve reached a cultural pivot point; in 2021 alone, we lost over 108,000 lives due to a drug-related fatality, and that’s the highest number ever recorded on American soil. The overwhelming majority of these deaths are due to fentanyl. Young people today are sadly part of the ‘fentanyl generation’; the fastest rising age demographic for these fentanyl-related fatalities is age 15-25, as well as in communities of color. When BirdieLight speaks to young people at high schools and colleges across the country, we stress to them that, unfortunately, this IS the greatest public health crisis of their generation.

The HOPE Alliance of Monroe County, Ohio is a community coalition with a goal of increasing protective factors against substance use, mental health issues, and suicide. The acronym HOPE stands for “Helping Others through Prevention and Empowerment”. According to the Ohio Department of Health, 2020 had the highest rate of overdose deaths ever recorded in Ohio. Monroe County is rural with a population of only 13,329 residents; however, the average suicide rate is 18 per 100,000 (compared to 13 per 100,000 for Ohio).

RecoveryOhio is working to provide a full continuum of care to all of Ohio. RecoveryOhio’s goals are to create a system to help make treatment available to Ohioans in need, provide support services for those in recovery and their families, offer direction for the state’s prevention and education efforts, and work with local law enforcement to provide resources to fight illicit drugs at the source.

OACHC works to ensure access to high-quality affordable health care for all Ohioans through the growth and development of Ohio’s Community Health Centers. This means caring for our staff and employees too. Without taking care of our FQHC staff, we could not work to provide comprehensive, culturally competent, quality primary health care services to medically underserved communities and vulnerable populations.

In 2021, Ohio announced a new campaign aiming to reduce the stigmas surrounding addiction and mental illness.
The "Beat The Stigma" campaign is the result of months of research and input from Ohio’s addiction and mental health experts. Nearly $10 million was committed to the campaign in February after Franklin County commissioners passed a resolution. It will include billboards, spots airing on television and outreach on digital platforms.
