Teaching at UW – Fall 2024

Engage Students with Media

Oct. 18 | 12-1:30 p.m. | Zoom
If you’re teaching an in-person or hybrid course, you can use media and Canvas in simple ways to amplify learning and engagement. In this session you will (1) learn the basics of active learning and hybrid course design, (2) examine Canvas structure prototypes and (3) discuss media production strategies that will help you get started.

Challenging Conversations

Oct. 25 | 10-11:30 a.m. | Zoom
Offered again by popular demand – join CTLM and the Office of Student Assistance and Support for a conversation about navigating challenging dynamics in the classroom. In this session you will learn about campus resources and begin to develop language and strategies that work for you.

Engage Students in Discussion Sections

Oct. 30 | 1-2:30 p.m. | Zoom
Most of us have experienced – as a learner or as a teacher – class discussions that are energized and alive with different ideas and voices, as well as ones that fall flat, or involve just a few people interacting with the teacher. In this session, we’ll explore (and experience) some strategies and mindsets that will help you design and facilitate class discussions that lead to deeper learning through a sense of shared responsibility for the classroom environment.

Engage Students in Large Enrollment Courses

Nov. 8 | 9-10:30 a.m. | Zoom
Large enrollment courses can feel intimidating for both instructors and students. In this session, we will explore the complex concept of student engagement with a few helpful frameworks. We will then discuss strategies for scaling student engagement in large enrollment courses (& with the help of instructional technology). You will reflect on current ways (and consider new ways) students may engage in your large enrollment course.

Supporting Student Wellbeing

Nov. 19 | 2-3:30 p.m.| Zoom
This workshop will explore current data on UW–Madison students' wellbeing, highlight campus resources, and share good practices you can apply in your courses and interactions with students. Offered in partnership with University Health Services.
