Limnology Seminar: George Brooks, UW-Madison CFL

Join us for this weeks Limnology Seminar given by Postdoctoral Researcher George Brooks from UW - Madison. 12:05-12:55pm; Water Science Engineering Lab and Online. Zoom Link

This is a technical position in which the incumbent must have solid knowledge of geology and hydrogeology, well hydraulics, chemistry, soil science, environmental cleanups, and biological processes in subsurface soil and groundwater environments.  This position supports regional coordination of a major environmental program that affects other DNR programs, State agencies, local communities, and the public.  Specifically, this involves providing technical advice and recommendations to management, co-workers, senior staff, and Central Office.  The primary duty and responsibility of this position is to support and provide recommendations to the Remediation and Redevelopment (RR) Program at the regional level.  Job duties include gathering data on potentially contaminated sites, analyzing and interpreting site data, applying State regulations and standards to cleanup efforts, and processing the submittals of documentation completed for all stages of a project. This position is supervised by the Southeast Region RR Team Supervisor for work assignments. Applications due Dec. 8.

★ Lake Michigan Unit Manager - WI DNR Office of Great Waters

Under general direction and supervision of the Director of the Office of Great Waters, supervise all aspects of the Lake Michigan Basin as a member of the Office of Great Waters. As a basin supervisor this position is responsible for day-to-day management of multiple program operations within the Lake Michigan Basin. This position ensures the application of accepted team management concepts. The incumbent is responsible for assuring consistent application of all Department policy for the Lake Michigan Basin program. This position manages the relationships of the Region's key external partners and customers within the Lake Michigan Basin, which are numerous and complex. Applications due Dec. 8.

The Research Scientist will work with all aspects of the ERIC, its projects, and collaborative relationships.  Specifically, the Research Scientist will support field research projects by conducting field sampling, sample preparation, and analysis of a variety of surface and drinking water samples.  This includes primary support for the outreach programs around Wisconsin.  The Research Scientist may also mentor student interns and will support Freshwater Collaborative of Wisconsin activities. The Environmental Specialist will provide technical and policy support to the 1854 Treaty Authority and member reservations, the Bois Forte and Grand Portage bands. The position will be responsible for consultation and project activities related to the environmental health of the 1854 Ceded Territory. Specific duties may include but are not limited to: involvement in workgroups and planning initiatives (ex. Lake Superior Partnership, watershed planning), St. Louis River estuary restoration, review and consultation activities related to environmental impacts from industrial or other development projects, natural resource monitoring projects, and outreach and education activities. The position will be located in the offices of the 1854 Treaty Authority in Duluth, MN. Applications due Dec. 12.

★ 4 Student Fisheries Technicians Contractors - USGS Lake Ontario Biological Station

The USGS Great Lakes Science Center’s Tunison Laboratory of Aquatic Science (Cortland, NY) and Lake Ontario Biological Stations (Oswego, NY) are hiring up to four full-time (40 hours/week), 12-month Student Contractor positions to assist with fisheries research. Positions include Fish Experimentation, Large Research Vessel, and Information Management. We are looking for recently graduated (within the last 12-months) individuals who are excited to work collaboratively as part of a team. Students graduating in December 2025 are eligible to apply. The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) is offering summer internships through the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL). These positions provide hands-on experience in environmental and public health testing, with opportunities across areas like water microbiology, environmental chemistry, toxicology, and sample receiving. Students will gain exposure to lab operations, data management, and quality systems while working alongside scientists at Wisconsin’s public health lab. Applications due Dec. 12.

CUAHSI is seeking graduate student fellows to join the 2026 Water Prediction Innovators Summer Institute to be held June 8 - July 22, 2026. As a Fellow, you will work with peers from across the country on research projects that advance water prediction. Students work in teams to complete a research project related to a larger topic or theme. If you are interested in growing your professional skillset and network while contributing to cutting-edge research in water prediction, we encourage you to apply. Apply by Jan. 12.

CIGLR administers an annual Great Lakes Summer Fellows Program, in partnership with the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL). We place promising undergraduate (junior or senior as of Fall 2025) and graduate students with both academic and federal research mentors. Through this program, students work on substantive research issues in the Great Lakes and undergo a career training program that equips them with the knowledge and skills to be the next generation of Great Lakes scientists.

UW Oshkosh Summer Research and Internship Opportunities.

UW Oshkosh has multiple hands-on summer research and internship experiences through its Environmental Research and Innovation center. These positions are open to undergraduates enrolled at any university. Positions are filled as people apply. The UW Arboretum is seeking proposal from graduate student researchers for the 2026 Arboretum Research Fellowships. We invite proposals in all areas relevant to our mission to conserve and restore Arboretum lands, advance restoration ecology, and foster the land ethic. There are multiple fellowships available. The funding period begins in May 2026. Proposals are due Feb. 1.

The LAKES REU is recruiting eight students from ANY university to join its 10th cohort June 7-Aug. 8, 2026. The REU is funded by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Defense ASSURE program. Housing, stipends, and funds for food will be provided to accepted students. UW-Stout will also provide funding for students to present their research at a national conference in the year following their summer research. Applications due Feb. 1.

Jan. 26–27. Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center in Ashland, WI. The theme, “Stronger Together: Linking Land, Water, and People,” will feature presentations, lightning talks, workshops, field trips, and networking opportunities focused on conservation across Wisconsin's Lake Superior Basin. Register here.

Jan. 27-29. Fayetteville, AR. Join early career researchers from across the 12 Gulf Hypoxia Task Force states for an intensive three-day forum designed to advance nutrient reduction science in the Mississippi River Basin. This workshop brings together undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers from diverse disciplines including engineering, biology, chemistry, economics, social sciences, extension, and policy. We seek passionate early career researchers whose work addresses water quality challenges in the Mississippi River Basin, with particular interest in the seven Gulf Hypoxia Task Force research priority areas. Applications are especially encouraged from researchers at institutions within the 12-state basin region. Register by Dec. 5.

Feb 22-27. Glasgow, Scotland. The Ocean Sciences Meeting (OSM) is the flagship conference for the ocean sciences and the larger ocean-connected community. At OSM, attendees from across the globe come together to advance global science, discover the latest research findings, and connect with peers, leading experts, and organizations committed to ocean sustainability.

Feb. 24-26. Baraboo, WI; The annual Wetland Science Conference is a program of Wisconsin Wetlands Association. The conference typically runs for 2-3 days and includes a keynote address, topical oral sessions, a poster session, workshops, working groups, a Wednesday evening networking event, and field trips to area wetlands. Scholarship applications due Jan 12, 2026.

April 9-10. Brookfield, WI. This year's theme is celebrating a milestone- AWRA-WI at 50: Honoring Our Past, Shaping our Future. The annual meeting is designed to create a student-friendly atmosphere, with undergraduate and graduate students strongly encouraged to present (poster or oral) and discuss Wisconsin-related research in all aspects of water science and policy. Each student presenter is provided with constructive comments, and $200 awards will be offered to four different student presenters. Other planned activities include a new member coffee hour with prize drawings and a student career panel luncheon. Abstracts due Jan. 5. Registration will be available in Feb. 2026.

April 15-17. Stevens Point, WI. The 2026 Lakes and Rivers Convention is accepting presentation proposals for its annual conference. This is a student-friendly event! Students are encouraged to present a poster or lightning talk. The event will take place April 15-17 in Stevens Point. Details for submissions are here. 

April 28-29. Champaign, IL and Online. The conference will feature traditional 15-minute presentations and a poster session on the latest in emerging contaminant research, policies, and outreach in the soil, water, and air. In addition, there will be plenty of opportunities for discussion and networking with those interested in all aspects of emerging contaminants in the environment. Registration opens March 2026.

★ Wisconsin Invasive Species Council: 22nd Annual Invasive Species Action Awards

Know of a person, group or organization that helps manage invasive species? Consider nominating them for the 22nd Annual Invasive Species Action Awards! Each year, the Wisconsin Invasive Species Council hosts the awards to recognize Wisconsin citizens and organizations that have gone above and beyond to prevent the spread of, raise awareness for, or control invasive species that pose threats to Wisconsin lands, waters, and wetlands. Nomination info here and due Feb. 15.

UW-Madison Course Offering: Water and People SOIL SCI/ATM OCN/BSE 132

UW Madison will be offering a course focused on Water and People this summer, that counts towards the new Freshwater and Marine Sciences certificate major. This course is 3 credit hours, online, asynchronous, and held in the 8-week summer session.

Current’s Third Coast Water Seminar Series is back! Relaunching in Fall 2025, the series returns with a sharpened focus on the research, technologies, and policies advancing a circular water economy both in the Great Lakes region, the broader U.S., and globally. First Wednesday of each month.
