Tap-In: Water@UW-Madison News

Water@UW-Madison 2026 Spring Symposium Recap!
More than 120 students, researchers, staff, and partners joined us for Blue Futures an afternoon of keynotes, lightning talks, and conversation that felt both urgent and optimistic. From the opening remarks through the final discussions, the energy in the room was high.

Speakers and presenters took on the real tensions shaping water research today, exploring the promises and risks of emerging technologies without oversimplifying either side. Talks were grounded, candid, and forward‑looking, sparking thoughtful questions and lively exchanges across disciplines and career stages.

During the networking break and our Blue Futures Science Fair, the room filled quickly with conversation. Folks shared new ideas, practical insights and we hope these relationships will extend well beyond the symposium. The engagement and enthusiasm underscored the value of creating space to think together about where water research is headed, and how we move there responsibly as a community. Details and photos.

MONDAY 5/4
Alliance for the Great Lakes: New Policies for Data Centers and Large Water Users
Data centers are proliferating across the Great Lakes region. How can we ensure they use our water resources sustainably and prevent pollution in our communities? Join the Alliance for the Great Lakes to hear about solutions. As data centers proliferate across the Great Lakes region, federal, state and local governments are proposing new frameworks and policy solutions to manage their impact, including the POWER Act in Illinois. At the same time, businesses are innovating sustainable solutions that reduce water use and prevent pollution. 3:00pm CST Register Here. If you’re unable to attend, register anyhow, and we’ll send you a recording.
TUESDAY 5/5
Wisconsin Wetlands Association: Wetland Community Gathering at Delta Beer Lab
Join to celebrate American Wetlands Month at a special social gathering at Delta Beer Lab! In addition to conversations with other wetland enthusiasts, partake in cornhole, darts, shuffleboard, and other games, and help raise funds for Wisconsin’s wetlands (Delta Beer Lab will donate a portion of the evening’s proceeds to WWA). While an RSVP is not required, it will help plan for the crowd, so please click here to let WWA know you plan to attend. And bring your friends, neighbors, and (of age) family! 4:00 – 7:00PM CST. 167 E Badger Rd, Fitchburg, WI
THURSDAY 5/7
Great Lakes Freshwater Symposium: Powering Progress or Peril? The Hidden Environmental Costs of AI-Data Centers
The proliferation of AI-data centers across the United States is causing concern in communities. The Center for Water Policy at UW-Milwaukee recently released a report that outlines a model with draft legislative language that can be customized by states and local governments to suit their needs. Tressie Kamp, assistant director of the Center for Water Policy, will share the findings, which investigate the environmental footprint of data centers in the United States, with a focus on water usage. This event is part of the online Great Lakes Freshwater Symposium series, a partnership between the Freshwater Collaborative of Wisconsin, the Great Lakes Higher Education Consortium and Council of the Great Lakes Region. Noon. Online. Register Here.
FRIDAY 5/8
Wisconsin Wetlands Association: Wetland Coffee Break
Join for an upcoming Wetland Coffee Break! Climate Change Program Coordinator for the Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Commission, Rob Croll and Coastal Training Program Coordinator for the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve, Karina Heim will join us Friday, May 8, to introduce Ganawenindiwag: Working with Plant Relatives to Heal and Protect Gichigami Shorelines, a resource that encourages people to care for these shorelines by reimagining their relationships with plant beings that have long existed in this coastal landscape and that stabilize soils, provide habitats, support culture, and offer food and medicine for humans and wildlife. 10:30am CST. Online. Register Here.

CONFERENCES
2026 Wisconsin Environmental Health Association Conference
September 16-18. Wisconsin Dells, WI. Join environmental health professionals from across Wisconsin for three days of learning, connection, and inspiration at the WEHA Annual Education Conference. Whether you are a seasoned professional, new to the field, or a student exploring a career in Environmental Health, this conference offers educational sessions, networking opportunities, and practical insights designed to support your growth and engagement in the profession. 46th North American Lake Management Society International Symposium
November 3–6. Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. Water resources in this semi-arid setting are under increasing pressure, compounded by watershed-scale disturbances and a warming climate. Warmer and drier conditions during the growing season often lead to agricultural, urban, and environmental water demands surpassing the available water resources.
To discuss these and other important management issues, NALMS is pleased to return to Canada for NALMS 2026! The program will feature workshops, field trips, presentations, networking events, and vendor displays. Abstracts are due May 22. Registration Open.
The State of Lake Michigan Meeting
November 4–6. Michigan City, Indiana. Supported in part by Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant, University of Illinois Extension, and Purdue University. We are now accepting proposals for Organized Symposia/Workshops. Our goal is to provide a dynamic forum for sharing research, discussing emerging issues, and strengthening collaboration across the Great Lakes community. Symposia and workshops are the scientific centerpiece of the meeting and help shape the overall program. If you have an innovative idea on a timely topic relevant to Lake Michigan science, management, or community engagement, we invite you to submit a proposal for consideration. Please submit your ideas and information here. Submission deadline is 1:00pm EST on June 1, 2026.
