Greetings from the Center for Campus History, and happy Thanksgiving! With the holiday break upon us, we’d thought we’d give our standard newsletter a break as well. But just in time for folks hitting the airport, taking a road trip or trying to drown out an opinionated uncle, the whole first season of the Center’s new podcast, Reorientation, is now available!

The University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Rebecca M. Blank Center For Campus History is an ongoing effort to expand and enrich UW-Madison’s historical narrative by centering the voices, experiences, and struggles of marginalized groups. As always, if you have a story to share, an event you think should be researched, or a person you think has been overlooked, please email us at centerforcampushistory@wisc.edu.

In our inaugural run of episodes we asked what’s the deal with campus police?

How did UW–Madison and hundreds of other universities across the country end up with their own deputized law enforcement agencies? And what does their existence mean for the communities they police, both on and off campus?

With original archival research and expert interviews, Season 1 follows the history of campus safety from the early days of night watchmen and security guards policing student morality to the turbulent 1960s and through to the ultra-professional police forces schools employ today.

You can listen on the CCH website or subscribe on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

Each episode is also paired with a complete teaching guide and a transcript with full citations.
