APRIL AWARENESS INITIATIVES
|
|
|
|
Alcohol Awareness Month, observed each April, seeks to raise awareness about the impact of alcohol misuse on individuals, families, and communities. NIAAA focuses its message on the dangers of underage drinking to promote a safer and healthier future for young people. SAMHSA provides a comprehensive toolkit with images and messages designed for easy sharing on social media. By highlighting the dangers and providing resources for prevention, these organizations and others aim to reduce the dangers of alcohol misuse and related harms.

Anti-Stigma Campaign in Northern Wisconsin
For the past few years, communities have recognized stigma as a major issue needing attention. Stigma affects the quality of care for those with substance use disorders, encourages discrimination, and fosters negative self-perceptions. In northern Wisconsin, several community coalitions identified stigma as the primary barrier to substance use disorder treatment. In 2023, funded by a SAMHSA grant, the UW-Madison Extension partnered with four coalitions on a campaign to address opioid stigma. The campaign includes social marketing messages and billboards, featuring community members to emphasize the importance of community support.

Revisiting TASC Part I: Expanding to Communities Across the Region
Taking Action to Address Substance Use in Communities (TASC) is a multi-state, multidisciplinary collaborative program meant to provide the tools necessary for communities to develop robust Recovery Oriented Systems of Care. We spoke to the Purdue team behind TASC – Dr. Michael Wilcox, Dr. Nicole Adams, and Elisa Worland, LSW – to learn more. The team, fitted with an economist, a nurse, and a social worker by training respectively, reflects TASC’s multidisciplinary and inclusive approach.
The TASC curriculum is designed for use in rural and urban places. The group using the curriculum defines the scope of the community. TASC could be implemented in a suburb, an urban neighborhood, or a rural county, due to its flexibility and adaptability. Initially, TASC was developed to address the 2020 opioid crisis in the North Central Region[AS1] . However, as the team was developing the curriculum, people from across the country expressed interest in being trained to use the curriculum to address all types of substance use.

Help is on the Way
Most of us have our self-care routines or ways we look to unwind. Music can be an important part of managing stress. I listen to everything from classical music, hair bands from the late eighties, and offshoots in between. We look for music to motivate, entertain, and even inspire us. One of my morning workout songs is by the band Rise Against, and the title is “Help is on the Way.”
I have seen the music video and listened to this song countless times. As I listened, I started to think and wonder if this is the dichotomy of how our veterans and first responders feel. While they serve, they are the “help that is on the way.” While I served in law enforcement for twenty-five and a half years, I contemplated this dichotomy every time I got a S.W.A.T. call out “Help is on the way.”
