2025-2026 Data Digest is here—five data points to jump-start your review

The Data Digest, published annually, is a source of key metrics about UW–Madison on a range of topics. The 2025-2026 Data Digest provides comprehensive information about students, faculty, staff, budget, and expenditures. Begin your exploration of the 2025-2026 Data Digest with these five key data points.

Data point #1. The number of enrolled undergraduate students has increased yearly since 2016 (page 2).

Data point #2. Almost 74,000 fall semester new freshman applications were received (page 17), a 12% increase over the previous year.

Data point #3. First-year student retention, as well as 4-year and 6-year graduation rates, are the highest ever (page 22).

Data Point #4. The total number of living alumni has topped 500,000 (page 32).

Data point #5. Madison’s budget has diverse funding sources, with federal programs, gifts and grants, and tuition making up 64% (page 75).
