January’s Tableau visualization: the Dean’s List
What does the Dean’s List visualization show?

Unsurprisingly, the Dean's List visualization receives many visits. It highlights high-achieving students, and students, their families, and friends want to know who made the list.

Only undergraduate students seeking degrees are included, and the visualization is updated on June 1st for spring terms and January 1st for fall terms. You can also explore the Wisconsin and U.S. maps within the visualization to gain a visual representation of Dean’s List achievers across different regions.

Where does the data come from?

The Office of the Registrar built and maintains the Dean’s List visualization, sourcing data from UW–Madison’s InfoAccess warehouse. If a student has requested that some personal information, including name, awards, and street addresses, not be made public, then they will not be publicly acknowledged on the Dean’s List website or in announcements sent to hometown newspapers. This is commonly called a “FERPA hold”. Read more about the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FEPRA).

The visualization is refreshed daily at 7:00 am to ensure accuracy, incorporating grade changes and adjustments to students’ FERPA privacy restrictions.

If you have questions about this visualization, email the Office of the Registrar—they are happy to help.

Behind the scenes: how data stewards protect and provide access at UW–Madison
Resources for the Workday transition highlighted during our December Badger Data Network
John Dreger and Phil Hull, are data stewards for financial aid and student records, respectively. They carefully review requests and balance regulatory compliance with helping colleagues access the data they need to carry out their job duties. Read more about their roles.
Lonnie Morgan, ATP Campus Change Readiness Co-Lead for Data and Reporting, showcased many resources available. We recommend reviewing what he mentioned and engaging in feedback opportunities. Discover what Lonnie shared.

Updates to UW–Madison’s Data and Reporting web page: a key resource for Madison-specific ATP information
The data and reporting page offers information for individuals who use existing data warehouses for analytic purposes or as a connection point for ancillary systems, such as Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) or WISDM/WISER. New information, including Madison ATP Data and Reporting Transition Guide and Workday Reporting via Tableau, has been added.

January’s Badger Data Network: Guided tour of research expenditures visualization and an opportunity to provide feedback on RADAR
The National Science Foundation's (NSF's) Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) survey is the primary source of information on research and development expenditures at U.S. universities. In recently released data, UW-Madison's $1.7 billion in research expenditures ranked 6th overall, which was featured in an InsideUW article.

DAPIR has prepared a data visualization that displays NSF HERD research expenditure data for UW‑Madison and other institutions from FY 2003 to FY 2023. Join us for a guided tour through this visualization.

We are getting ready to release an enhanced version of RADAR that better leverages Tableau and its tree map feature. In January, we will share that with you and gather your thoughts on future RADAR enhancements.
