Hello Data Lovers! 📊

In this issue:
  • July Badger Data Network information
  • Institutional Data Access and Authorization Standard
  • EAP's dataset reviews- your feedback is needed
Forward this to another data lover so they can sign up for the DAPIR Digest!
Join us via Zoom on July 17 at 10 a.m. for our Badger Data Network meeting. Because technical difficulties prevented us from hosting our June meeting, we will discuss how our analyst roles need to grow to work with new AI technologies in July.

Bethany Crowell, UW–Madison’s Associate Vice Provost for Institutional Research and Decision Support, and Julie Carpenter-Hubin, former Assistant Vice President of Institutional Research and Planning at Ohio State, first shared this information with a standing-room-only crowd of analysts at the AIR (Association for Institutional Research) Forum Annual Conference in May.

They will discuss how AI tools can automate analysts' tasks in central institutional research offices and decentralized units and our role in providing contextual expertise that makes analyses meaningful.

Come and explore how AI supports, not replaces our work.

A password is not required for the Zoom meeting. To enter Zoom, you must be signed into a UW–Madison authenticated Zoom account. For assistance, see Signing into Zoom or UW-Madison Zoom - Getting started KB’s.

Data access and authorization: a standard practice
The Institutional Data Access and Authorization Standard requires that access to protected data (or data classified as internal, sensitive, or restricted) follow a minimum set of authorization steps and track and document the process.

Data Stewards grant or deny access to data in their domain. You may be authorized to access protected institutional data if:
  1. The data is needed to perform duties assigned to your job or role at the university
  2. For sensitive or restricted data,
  • You attest to complete certain obligations to protect the data, such as required training on rules and regulations.
  • Your access is approved by a supervisor and, optionally, an divisional approver.
The Data Policies, Procedures, and Standards webpage provides more details on the process outlined above.

Act now—your feedback is vital!
Now is the time to give your feedback on datasets for the future System HR and finance data environment (Workday). If you currently use the HR and financial warehouse, this is your one chance to share your thoughts.

EAP’s Dataset Reviews webpage contains a schedule of upcoming events, including dates and times, information on datasets, and Zoom links. The next date, hosted via Zoom, is Wednesday, July 10 from 11 a.m. to noon.

Recorded sessions are available, and you can still complete a feedback survey for previously reviewed data sets. It is unknown how long this opportunity will be available.
