Good day, data devotees! 📊

We have a full DAPIR Digest this month. Read on to find out what we discussed at our May Badger Data Network meeting and what is ahead for June. This edition also covers data classifications, office hours with Vice Provost Allison La Tarte, recognition for a DAPIR staff member, and EAP dataset review dates.

Forward this to another data devotee so they can sign up for the DAPIR Digest!

Join us via Zoom on June 19 at 10 a.m. for our Badger Data Network meeting, where we will discuss how our analyst roles need to grow to work in tandem with new AI technologies.

Bethany Crowell, UW–Madison’s Associate Vice Provost for Institutional Research and Decision Support, and Julie Carpenter-Hubin, former Assistant Vice President of Institutional Research and Planning at the Ohio State, will share how AI tools can automate analysts' task in central institutional research offices and decentralized units and our role in providing contextual expertise that makes analyses meaningful.

Come and explore how AI supports, not replaces, our work.

May’s Badger Data Network—3 next steps
Brad Roll and Kurt McMillen, ATP leaders, joined us for our May Badger Data Network session. They explained Workday’s object model, provided a comprehensive overview of Workday’s reporting tools, and discussed role-based security options.

The presentation's previously recorded video, slide deck, and Q&A are available. Recordings of other presentations and information for future sessions are located on ATP’s Secure Technical Curriculum site (NetID required).

Your next steps include:
  1. Reaching out to Brad or Kurt with questions.
  2. Sharing information about Workday reporting by forwarding this newsletter to coworkers who would benefit.
  3. Reviewing ATP Data & Reporting’s FAQs and report inventory.

Office Hours with Vice Provost Allison La Tarte
On the fourth Wednesday of each month, from 10 to 11 a.m., Allison is available for one-on-one discussions with faculty, staff, and students. During this time you could:
  • ask a burning question about institutional data
  • learn how DAPIR could help your unit
  • discuss emerging data trends or learn more about data literacy
Email Amber Klein, executive assistant, to schedule.

What is data classification?
UW–Madison employees work with many data types, and we manage and steward data through data classification based on risk. A data steward may assign one of the following classifications:
  • Public
  • Internal
  • Sensitive
  • Restricted
Stewards may change the data classification when data elements are combined. Date of birth alone is not sensitive, but if it is available along with a person’s name, the combined dataset is considered sensitive. More examples are available on the data classification webpage.

In January, the UW–Madison Data Classification Discovery Team launched a survey to identify gaps and areas of confusion with the goal of updating the UW-504 Policy (Data Classification) and potentially aligning it with the newer UW System Administrative Policy 1031 (Information Security: Data Classification and Protection). The results of that survey and proposed next steps will be shared in the future.

Congratulations Mehrnaz Ahmadi Joobaneh!
Hats off to Mehrnaz Ahmadi Joobaneh, BI Developer for DAPIR, this year's recipient of the Ellen La Luzerne Award for Community Engagement!

Presented annually at the IT Professionals Conference, it recognizes a member of the IT community for their role as a community builder and active volunteer in professional service to the broader community. Honorees are nominated by their peers and selected by a committee from across UW's distributed IT community.

A round of applause for Mehrnaz! 👏

EAP seeks feedback on datasets
The Systemwide Enterprise Analytics Platform (EAP) invites all interested stakeholders to review datasets for the future System HR and finance data environment.

EAP’s Dataset Reviews contains the full schedule, including dates and times, information on datasets, and Zoom links. The next date, hosted via Zoom, is Wednesday, June 5 from 11 a.m. to noon.
