Tableau visualization of the month: Majors, Options, and Degrees
What does the Majors, Options, and Degrees visualization show?
This Tableau visualization allows users to view and search for active majors, options, degrees, and certificates as of the current day. The Majors, Options, and Degree and Certificate tabs are set to the current (fall, spring, or summer) term. The Data Exporter tab allows you to select the current or a future term. The visualization is updated nightly and reflects changes approved by governance and implemented in SIS (Student Information System).

Based on recent feedback from students and the advising community, the Office of the Registrar enhanced the Majors, Options, and Degree dashboard to include the transcript description. This change helps students understand what to expect on their transcript upon degree conferral.

What are some examples of people who might use the visualization and why?
This visualization is intended for the general public, students, and the Office of the Registrar staff looking for information on majors, options, degrees, and certificates.

Where does the data come from?
This visualization uses data from UW–Madison’s InfoAccess Warehouse, which contains source data from SIS. This warehouse is the source of much of the data used for UW–Madison’s institutional reporting.

Although this information has been available for some time, a Tableau visualization allows end users to explore, sort, and filter it quickly in a way that was impossible in previous PDF reports.

If you have questions about this visualization, email the Office of the Registrar—they are happy to help.

Read the full recap.
New staff members join the DAPIR team
DAPIR's Institutional Research & Decision Support (IRDS) team welcomes two new staff members. Jessica Liu (BI Developer) began at the end of February, and Tracy Reuter (Data Scientist) starts on March 3. Read more about their backgrounds and upcoming work projects.

Tableau User Guide has been updated, and a RADAR enhancement is coming soon
The Navigating Tableau User Guide has been updated. The guide explains how to navigate a workbook, including the basic structure, filtering and downloading information, and saving a custom view. A new section shows how to navigate IDEs (Institutional Data Exporters). IDEs let approved users set relevant filters and download a spreadsheet containing unit-record data.

You can also access the guide through Tableau workbooks. Contact us if you need help using this document, want to share feedback, or have questions.

RADAR (Repository of Administrative Data and Reports), the one-stop central portal for exploring and locating UW-Madison’s administrative data and reports, will be updated to leverage Tableau’s tree map feature in mid-March. Remember you must be on the campus network or logged into the campus VPN to access non-publicly available Tableau reports.
