At UW-Madison, we protect data—learn more in under 30 minutes.

Do you understand your responsibilities regarding the institutional data you collect and use every day?

Designed for all UW-Madison employees, Data@UW - Data Governance and Responsible Use, a 30-minute, self-paced module, shares crucial steps to maintain the security of our institution’s data. Data that includes social security numbers, benefits elections, financial data, cybersecurity information, student records, and, for many, increased access to these data in Workday.

Inappropriately accessed or shared data can cause harm to students, faculty, and staff, and UW–Madison.

After completing the course, a UW–Madison employee shared,

"I finally understand how the data governance council works, including data domains, stewards, and trustees.

I also learned that screen sharing is a form of data sharing and requires the same authorization as other forms of sharing, and that we need to take care to secure printed materials as well as we take care of electronic materials."
Educate yourself about safe practices and take the Data@UW module.

Sharing a new review process for institutional surveys

Feedback from our campus community is essential for guiding activities across the institution, and surveys are often an effective way to collect that information. To ensure we don’t overburden students, faculty, and staff with too many surveys, a review, approval, and coordination process for institutional surveys has been developed.

Behind the numbers—understanding UW–Madison’s census date for enrollment

Each fall, UW–Madison takes an official snapshot of student enrollment on the 10th day of classes, known as the institution’s “census date.” These counts, also known as our “frozen enrollment” counts, are used in key reports and comparisons and provide a foundation for understanding and sharing enrollment data and trends.

Updated visualizations: Trends in Student Enrollments and Trends in Degrees

DAPIR recently updated two institutional Tableau visualizations to reflect fall 2025 census numbers. The Trends in Student Enrollments and Trends in Degrees and Related Data visualizations provide insights into enrollments and degrees over time, broken down by student characteristics and majors, among other topics of interest.

To access the visualizations using these links, you need a NetID and to be on campus or connected via VPN.  Explore the visualizations in more detail.

Program review workshop recording now available

DAPIR, the Graduate School, and Student Learning and Assessment hosted a program review workshop last month, intended for academic departments and programs undertaking program review.

The workshop covered the review timeline and process, provided an in-depth review of the self-study report, and highlighted available data resources.

November’s Badger Data Network topic

In November, Brad Sanders, DAPIR's Director of Enterprise Data Management, joins us to discuss the Badger Data Platform, a new UW—Madison enterprise institutional data ecosystem that comprises services and tools designed to advance the use of our data and data-informed decision-making, simplifying data access. The platform will:

  • Provide a single location to find and query data.
  • Empower you to connect data from multiple systems.
  • Use a unified security model.
