A vision for a modern data platform— making it easier to get and use data
At the Badger Data Network’s August session, Brad Sanders, DAPIR’s Director of Enterprise Data Management, provided a brief overview of the modernization efforts of UW–Madison’s data platform.

Three identified goals:
#1 Simplified data access, including:
  • One place for most users to find and query data
  • One account, one set of credentials
  • One layer of security to manage
#2 Many systems and one view of data
  • Quickly make data objects that are built out of multiple data systems
  • Clear lineage of how views are made
  • Clear metadata for views, including how they are used and secured
#3 Immediately connect impacted data sources and have room to grow as we progress

As this project progresses, we will continue sharing updates through various channels, including our website and newsletter.

Act now—provide vital feedback on Workday datasets
Now is the time to give your input on datasets for the future System HR and finance data environment (Workday). If you currently use the HR and financial warehouse, this is your one chance to share your thoughts.

EAP’s Dataset Reviews contains a schedule of upcoming events, including dates and times, information on datasets, and Zoom links. The next date, hosted via Zoom, is Wednesday, September 25, from 11 a.m. to noon.

Recorded sessions are available, and you can still complete a feedback survey for previously reviewed data sets. The end date of this opportunity is still being determined.

Accessing test Workday data: UW–Madison’s approach
Test Workday data will be available to data analysts, functional teams, and technical teams for approved uses as the Enterprise Analytics Platform (EAP) and Administrative Transformation Program (ATP) teams release it. To get access to test Workday data, complete this form.

If access is approved, users will be granted access to data via temporary solutions (Box and Tableau) as we work towards our long-term solution, discussed in our vision for a modern data platform. Visit Madison's approach to EAP data to stay up to date on the progress of that solution.

Survey results help inform recommendations for updating Madison’s data classification policy
In January 2024, over 530 Madison faculty and staff completed a survey that gave insight into how they use and understand data classification at UW–Madison. The survey responses and a gap analysis of the existing data classification policy resulted in several recommendations.
  • When the data classification policy is updated, it must be concise and clear.
  • Information about where to find help, including contact information, must be included.
  • Data classification designations must be built into operational practices.
  • A robust rollout of an updated policy will enhance the successful and consistent application of data classification.
The May 2024 Data Classification Discovery Team Recommendation Report contains additional survey and gap analysis details, committee members, and next steps.

Data literacy: September Badger Data Network
Increasing data literacy is an ongoing effort. During our September Badger Data Network gathering, we will support your growth in data literacy by discussing new resources and best practices. Some resources may enhance your expertise, while others can help improve your colleagues' data literacy. Various presenters will showcase these resources, and attendees are encouraged to share their tools and practices.
