Badger Precollege student writes on large chalkboard

A Badger Precollege beginning, a physics future ahead

When Nathan Wagner arrived on campus for his first Badger Precollege summer program, he was simply a math‑curious middle schooler looking for a challenge. What he found was a community that encouraged big questions, celebrated curiosity and made learning feel both exciting and possible.

Those early experiences — living in the residence halls, tackling new subjects and connecting with peers who shared his enthusiasm — helped him discover a passion for physics that carried him to UW–Madison, where he’s currently double-majoring in math and physics. That spark recently helped him earn the prestigious Astronaut Scholarship and the confidence to imagine an even bigger future. His story is a reminder of how early opportunities can shape a student’s path in unexpected ways.

Mirta and students in Rome

Finding her voice, then helping others find theirs

As a young newcomer to the U.S., Mirta Pagnucci learned English by watching, listening and slowly finding her footing. Those early lessons in patience and vulnerability have helped her learn multiple languages over the years. Today, it also informs the way she teaches UW Continuing Education language courses in Italian and French, where she builds learner confidence through steady progress and a welcoming environment.
