Balancing the joy of summer with the heavy reality of a parent’s cancer diagnosis is no small feat, but the UW–Madison chapter of Camp Kesem creates a free, transformative space where grief and joy beautifully coexist. Just ask UW sophomore Lariska Kons. After her mom was diagnosed with cancer when Lariska was just seven, the free camp offered her a healing, fun space.
Today, Lariska is one of many passionate UW–Madison student volunteers helping to foster community, confidence and lifelong bonds for the kids who attend this week-long summer camp. By managing everything from fundraisers to camp operations, Badger students gain vital professional skills while learning the profound impact of empathy. For both the campers and the student counselors, Kesem proves that powerful community and unwavering kindness can emerge from life's greatest challenges.
