Great Lakes ROTA-RC Reporter  February 2024
 
The Great Lakes Rural Opioid Technical Assistance-Regional Center (ROTA-RC) is a multi-state collaboration of Cooperative Extension programs working to address mental health and substance use concerns in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. This six-state collaboration is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
Happy February! As we embrace the lengthening days and promise of spring, we also commemorate Black History Month, a time to reflect on the resilience, achievements, and contributions of Black individuals throughout history. Join us in celebrating the voices that have shaped our past and inspire our future. Strengthening Families, Supporting Parents: Encouraging Protective Factors Through In-Home Education

The Development of Living Skills (DLS) program, housed within the Family and Consumer Sciences division of Ohio State University Extension, has been collaborating with parents in Butler County for over 35 years. Via the program’s long standing relationship with the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services, the DLS program receives client referrals from child services workers in the county. In the case of many of these referrals, the children have been removed from their home due to allegations of abuse and neglect or are at high risk of being removed.

Extension Helping to Extend Total Wellness Through Alternative Education

The Ohio State University Extension campus is part of the growing state Extension Cooperatives, extending its reach to the community by incorporating modern, evidence-based approaches to total body wellness. These approaches prioritize the participant’s role in their own healing journey, focusing on both prevention and recovery-based outcomes. Programming strategies are tailored to appeal to participants across various life stages, health continuums, and needs.

Ken Stewart, a Family and Consumer Science Educator at The Ohio State University, shared his experiences as both a participant and trainer in three successful programs within his community. These programs offer virtual and in-person education, particularly valuable in areas where proactive health services may be limited.

The Opioid Response Network (ORN)

ORN provides education, training and consultation, also known as technical assistance or TA. Every state and territory have designated Technology Transfer Specialists to facilitate this work. These TTS are your local point people who work with you and ORN consultants in your community to meet your TA needs!
