Illinois Extension

Illinois Extension offers several programs to help people who work in agriculture to learn more about stress and stress management, as well as programs for agricultural community members to learn more about farm stress, mental health, and how to help someone who is struggling or in crisis.
Agricultural work includes a number of unique stressors, such as impacts of weather conditions and events. Stress among people in agriculture is important because it can contribute to negative mental health outcomes, and people in agriculture have higher rates of depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and deaths by suicide compared to the general population.
The Illinois Agricultural Mental Health Voucher Program connects agricultural producers and their families with local mental health professionals. This program enables producers to seek mental health services at no cost. From this program, we hope to broaden mental health access for agricultural producers and their families.
Whether in the field, barn, tractor, or home, these simple techniques may help you handle the stress that comes from farming. There are 8 sessions in the series that guide participants to stop, breathe, & think, visualize, use their senses and more.

Taking Action Against Substance Use in Communities (TASC)
Taking Action to Address Substance Use in Communities has been developed by a team of health professionals and Extension professionals from Purdue University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and The Ohio State University, to provide a theoretical framework for Extension professionals as they work with communities to create a collaborative approach to addressing substance use disorder (SUD). The waning and irregular access to treatment providers in rural areas, combined with a need to increase efforts to help individuals with SUD enter recovery, call for community-based approaches which increase collaboration among community organizations and individuals involved with substance use prevention, treatment, and recovery support.

Recovery Orientated Systems of Care
Recovery Orientated Systems of Care (ROSC) is a coordinated network of community-based services and supports that is person-centered and builds on the strengths and resiliencies of individuals, families, and communities to achieve recovery and improved health, wellness, and quality of life for those with or at risk of substance use disorders. The central focus of a ROSC is to create an infrastructure, or "system of care", with the resources to effectively address the full range of substance use problems within communities. The goals of the Illinois ROSC include:
- Building a culture that builds and nurtures recovery
- Building capacity and infrastructure to support a recovery-oriented system of care
- Developing commitment to implement and sustain a recovery-oriented system of care
- ROSC Councils
Illinois has implemented local ROSC Councils in eight communities through its Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care-Illinois Statewide Network (ROSC-ISN) program. This program established networked, geographically distributed ROSC Councils that will assist communities with building local recovery-oriented systems of care and that can network with the statewide ROSC.
