June is PTSD Awareness Month
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can affect anyone who has experienced trauma. It impacts people of all ages and backgrounds, often in silence. During PTSD Awareness Month, we recognize the strength of those living with PTSD and reaffirm our commitment to supporting recovery, reducing stigma, and expanding access to trauma-informed care.

Substance use disorder (SUD) is often comorbid with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Learn why these two disorders often co-occur and how those who have both differ from those who have either SUD or PTSD in terms of their physical and mental health and treatment outcomes. This webinar is intended for clinicians who treat SUD who want to learn more about how PTSD interacts with SUD and best practices for treating patients with both.

Managing life’s challenges in healthy ways allows participants to take better care of themselves and others. WeCOPE is an interactive program that helps adults cope with life stress. WeCOPE has been shown to reduce stress and depression, increase positive affect, and improve health behaviors.
PRESENTERS
Amanda Coorough, MSSA, is the regional project manager of the Great Lakes ROTA-RC grant for HHS Region 5 who worked in many community settings before joining UW-Madison Extension as an educator in health & well-being and families.
Mike Blaser, MS-OCL, is a retired police lieutenant a certified Trauma Instructor for the Mercy Health system in Rock County, WI. Mike specializes in tactics, leadership, stress management, and crisis intervention.

Preventing Substance Use Among Young Adults with Disabilities

Individuals with disabilities who experience substance use disorders often face distinct barriers that require tailored strategies to support their recovery. A comprehensive approach should address accessibility, healthcare coordination, social stigma, and individualized treatment options.
Presenter Humberto Carvalho, MS, is a seasoned public health professional with extensive experience leading domestic and international initiatives funded by the U.S. government. He holds a Master of Public Health Leadership with a concentration in epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Over the course of almost 13 years at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Humberto played a pivotal role in shaping public health policies and advancing key initiatives to promote mental health and substance use treatment and prevention.

Presenter Jennifer Heywood, LISW-S, LICDC-CS, has been training helping professionals since 1998. Her specialties include diagnosis, motivational interviewing, addictions focus topics, drug free workplace trainings, ethics, and supervision.
