TA Networks

TA Networks are peer-led communities of graduate student instructors across disciplines. They provide a confidential and supportive space to discuss teaching challenges, share successful strategies, and problem-solve with peers who understand the unique drive experience of being a TA. Participation is a great way for TAs to build their teaching skills, reduce feelings of isolation, and develop a stronger professional network! All are invited to attend any session that fits in their schedule! Express your interest here to be sure you are invited to future events.

The remaining TA Networks for this month:

  1. Sanity Hour: Vent & Validate, Thursday, September 18, 4:00-5:30PM, Van Vleck B115.
  2. Disabled TAs Kickoff Event, Tuesday, September 23, 3:00-4:00PM, Noland 342;
  3. International TAs Kickoff Event, Thursday, September 25, 3:00-4:00PM, Noland 342.

Chinese Names Pronunciation Workshop Recap

Last week was the third and final iteration of our Chinese Names Pronunciation Workshop. This workshop was designed to give TAs and LSAs knowledge, tips, and tricks for pronouncing the most common Chinese names they may encounter on campus. It was a fantastic opportunity to host this workshop and we look forward to continuing to provide resources that support our TAs in their vital work to serve our international student population. If you couldn't attend the sessions, please visit our website for additional resources.

 Teaching Tips from Experienced TAs

Teaching Mentors serve as facilitators at the annual Fall TA Training event. Those selected to be Teaching Mentors have a proven track record of excellence as educators and a strong desire to mentor TAs.

This Week's Teaching Mentor:
Levi Sherman is a PhD Candidate in Art History lecturing ART HIST 403.

Getting to Know your Students: Learning Student Names

"I try to learn my students’ names quickly, but it’s never easy. Last semester, I realized it was my fear of getting a name wrong that slowed down the process — the best way (for me) to learn names is just to use them in class. So, instead of poring over the photo roster, I decided to model that it’s okay to ask — for names and, occasionally, forgiveness. Students seemed to follow my lead and patiently introduced themselves to one another three or four (or more) weeks into the semester. And I learned faster than usual."
