I wish you a happy Saga Dawa month! You may ask, what is Saga Dawa? Saga Dawa Düchen, which fell on June 11th this year, commemorates the birth, the enlightenment, and the passing away of Lord Buddha. Buddhists around the world practice generosity, patience, compassion, and kinder conduct in order to accumulate and dedicate greater merit during this month. Tibetan Buddhists like me believe that the merit of our actions are multiplied many times over during this period (May 28th - June 25th in the Gregorian calendar) and we hold extended prayers for the benefit of all sentient beings. I feel very grateful to have spent some part of this month at Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim and to have had time with Rangjung Neljorma Khandro Tseringma Rinpoche, who visited the Center for Healthy Minds in Madison. I wish you a peaceful and compassion-filled month; may our actions free others from suffering, and may our dedication to loving kindness give rise to courage that can cut through the turbulence that surrounds us right now.

Khandro Tseringma Rinpoche, who is recognized as Rangjung Neljorma (a self-generated dakini) and the medium of the Tenma Oracle by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, recently visited the Center for Healthy Minds, Loka’s home at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. There, she engaged in an illuminating and vigorous dialogue with scientists and scholars whose work is rooted in Tibet and/ or Tibetan Buddhism. She spoke on the importance of embodying compassion and wisdom in order to navigate our complex and often polarized world and discussed with Dekila, Loka’s director, the different ways Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and nunneries are leading environmental protection efforts in the Himalayas.

I recently saw Flow, an animated film from Latvia. It’s visually stunning and heart-breaking and hope-giving all at the same time. The message feels especially relevant right now!
