Alumnus Carl Lindstrom Shares Global Experience

Carl Lindstrom graduated from UW–Madison with a master’s degree in Geography in 1972, and then he set out to see the world.

Now, Carl has provided a generous endowment that will give geography students more opportunities to see the world and make the types of cross-cultural connections that he cherishes.

Read about Carl's many adventures and the new Lindstrom Travel Award, which will be awarded for the first time this spring.

The Earth Sense Lab Takes on Alaska

For grad students in Associate Professor Christian Andresen’s interdisciplinary Earth Sense Lab, research often means traveling to Alaska to study local permafrost thaw and tundra ponds.

We talked to two graduate students in the lab, Katie Braun and Genevieve Kell, about their recent fieldwork trips.

Take a deep dive into the lab's research, including how Katie and Genevieve connected with the Alaskan landscape and community.

The final volume of the History of Cartography series (Volume 5) is set to be published in 2027.

Jude Leimer has been with the project since 1981, and has been the managing editor for every single volume—no small task.

Read Jude's take on the project, how important collaboration has been to its success, and what she hopes for the future.

Future Geographers on the Go

In October, a large group of undergraduate and graduate students took a field trip to Ayres Associates, an engineering consulting firm in Madison.

See how our students made invaluable connections and experimented with cutting-edge geospatial tools—plus, learn how you can help future geographers!

Alumni Updates

From Sandy Scherer, BA'87: "After 38 years of employment, 35 years with Waukesha County, I retired in March 2025. The last 25 years of my career I served as a Senior Planner and Supervisor as well as providing planning consultant services to the towns of Ottawa and Lisbon in Waukesha County. I was a member of WCCA and APA, and served on the board of APA-WI as VP of Membership for seven years. I also enjoyed mentoring a number of UW Madison students through the job shadowing program over the past several years. I served on the board of the Waukesha-Milwaukee Chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance and currently serve on the board of the Food Pantry of Waukesha County."
