On the afternoon of May 8, the Department of Geography gathered to celebrate our graduating seniors, professional master's students, and research master's and PhD students. We also handed out this year's awards, including the brand new Lindstrom Travel Award for undergrads. Congrats to all!

We're preparing to say goodbye to longtime professor and researcher Joe Mason, who will be retiring in January 2027. His research and work have made significant contributions to geomorphology and soil studies—and, of course, he's made a huge impact on our department.

Read about Joe's recent Yi-Fu talk, his career, and what he's looking forward to next.

From Science Hall to Computer Sciences

In June, the Department of Geography will officially move to the Computer Sciences building at 1210 W. Dayton Street. Getting ready has been a challenging process for all.

Find out how you move a huge collection of maps, discover the treasures we've found while packing, and learn what we're looking forward to in our new (temporary) home.

Sharing GIS Knowledge Across Campus

How can someone with no GIS experience learn about this exciting technology? Easy: they can take the Intro to GIS workshop sponsored by the State Cartographer’s Office, Robinson Map Library, and Digital Scholarship Hub at Memorial Library.

Peek inside the workshop and see what attendees can learn.

Geographers in the News

  • Professor Erika Marín-Spiotta received the inaugural Faculty Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Mentoring from the Graduate School (one of only six honorees). Congrats, Erika!
  • Professor Jack Williams joined forces with scientists and academics from across the country to present an important new report from the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), titled “A Synthesis Center for Paleoenvironmental Records of Extreme Events”
  • Undergraduate student Mara Zwicker's research on data center thermal modeling was recently co-published with Mark Thiele and the International Data Center Authority (IDCA)
  • Department students, faculty, and staff travelled to the American Association of Geographers annual meeting in San Francisco, presenting their work and networking with peers
  • GeoDS lab PhD student Qianheng Zhang won 1st place in the Best Student Honors Paper competition of the Geographic Information Science and System Specialty Group at AAG 2026. Nice work, Qianheng!
  • Howard Veregin and Mike Hasinoff in the State Cartographer's Office are working with Loka Ashwood, professor of community and environmental sociology, to support her research by creating an online interactive map that documents lost rural homes
  • Stephen Bartlett, a staff scientist in the department, is moving on to a new job as hydrogeologist in the WI Dept of Natural Resources. He made important contributions to research and as a mentor of students. We are excited for this next career move and wish him well!
