Illinois
Through the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS), the Pathways to Success program helps ensure that children and young adults can get local behavioral health services in the least restrictive setting.
|
Indiana
A little more than two years ago, launched Kicking The Stigma, a local and national effort to raise awareness about mental health and remove the stigma associated with mental illnesses. Since late 2020, Kicking The Stigma has committed more than $18 million to help address the mental health crisis in Indiana and beyond.

Michigan
University of Michigan is the institutional home of the nations first comprehensive center devoted to depression education and information.
|
Minnesota
The Hopeful Futures Campaign, as part of Take Action in Minnesota, a coalition of national organizations, is committed to ensuring that every student has access to effective and supportive school mental health care. The campaign’s school mental health report cards highlight accomplishments and provide important action steps to help address the children’s mental health crisis in every state.

Ohio
Project AWARE Ohio was a partnership between the Ohio Department of Education, the Center for School Based-Mental Health Programs at Miami University and the educational service centers within three pilot communities: Cuyahoga County, Warren County and Wood County. Funded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Project AWARE Ohio supported schools and communities in:
- Raising awareness of behavioral health issues among school-aged youth;
- Providing training to detect and respond to mental health challenges and crisis in children and young adults; and
- Increasing access to behavioral health supports for children, youth and families.

Wisconsin
Opening Avenues to Reentry Success (OARS) supports the prison to community transition of inmates living with a serious and persistent mental illness who are medium-to-high-risk of reoffending. The program is a collaborative effort of the Department of Corrections and the Department of Health Services. OARS uses a team approach to provide participants the stability and skills necessary to live successfully in the community. This includes connecting the participant with locally-based supports for health care, housing, education, employment, and transportation. Each participant's support is different depending on their individual needs. OARS is available in 51 counties.

- Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan have a higher prevalence of mental illness and lower rates of access to care for adult mental illness.
- Michigan, Minnesota, Indiana, and Ohio have a higher prevalence of mental illness and lower rates of access to care for youth mental illness.
- More than 1 in 5 adults live with a mental illness
- Over 1 in 5 youth (ages 13-18) either currently or at some point during their life, have had a seriously debilitating mental illness.
- About 1 in 25 U.S. adults lives with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression.
- 5 percent of adults (18 or older) experience a mental illness in any one year, equivalent to 43.8 million people.
- Access to care is still one of the most significant barriers to treatment. Stigma surrounding mental health and in seeking care is another.

Suicide is preventable and everyone has a role to play to save lives and create healthy and strong individuals, families, and communities. Suicide prevention requires a comprehensive public health approach. CDC developed the Suicide Prevention Resource for Action (Prevention Resource), which provides information on the best available evidence for suicide prevention. States and communities can use the Prevention Resource to help make decisions about suicide prevention activities. Strategies range from those designed to support people at increased risk to a focus on the whole population, regardless of risk.
