So, too do we spend this month dedicated to the renewal of hope and with an intentional focus on Mental Health awareness, stigma reduction and helping millions of Americans finding pathways to recovery. Join us this month as we elevate the work of our partners in Michigan as we learn about all they are doing to develop and strengthen community capacity to prevent, treat, and support recovery using a whole family/whole community approaches to provide culturally appropriate educational opportunities.

Meet the Great Lakes ROTA-RC
The Great Lakes ROTA-RC Advisory Board provides their knowledge, critical thinking and analysis to advise the technical assistance aspects of the leadership team. Advisory Board members serve as ambassadors and advocate for the program(s), providing a connection to, and ongoing exchange of, information and ideas with practitioners in the field of prevention, harm reduction, mental wellness, as well as with other partners who serve rural communities.
This month we recognize, our Michigan Advisory Board partner, Tory Werth, LMSW, CADC, Clinical Therapist, Recovery Coach, Trainer, person with lived experience.
Tory serves as a clinical therapist for an Outpatient Treatment for Opiate and other Drug Addiction program. Tory is a Licensed Masters Social Worker, Certified Alcohol Drug Addiction Counselor, Recovery Coach and also serves on the board for Recovery NOTES, and Community Recovery Alliance. Tory is also a person in long-term recovery since the age of 17, and is celebrating 28 years of being drug free.

Welcome to Community Recovery Alliance
Michigan just opened a Recovery Community Center in Petoskey. It’s through Community Recovery Alliance. This is one of the first Recovery Centers in northern Michigan that was started via grassroots, and is led and governed by people in recovery. Michigan is super excited about this and they have a lot going on learn more about the Petoskey center by following the link below;

The Michigan Opioid Collaborative is an interdisciplinary team supporting providers and communities to increase access to office-based addiction treatment, expand care, and improve quality of care with patients with opioid and other substance use disorders throughout Michigan.

Overdose Prevention Centers
Addressing the Overdose Crisis
In recent years, there has been expansion of proven harm reduction strategies to reduce overdose deaths. Harm reduction is a way of approaching and caring for people who use drugs that centers people’s dignity, humanity, and autonomy to reduce harms associated with substance use.
It uses practical strategies to meet people where they are to improve individual and community well-being and health. Decades of robust research on harm reduction strategies, specifically syringe services and naloxone distribution, demonstrate that these strategies are associated with reduced morbidity, mortality, and transmission of infectious diseases and improved individual health outcomes and services engagement and that they have high cost-effectiveness.

The Great Lakes Neighborhood

Northern Michigan Substance Abuse Services (NMSAS), is one of a number of programs that Michigan calls neighbor. They do free trainings and presentations for the recovery community and beyond to get more people involved, and to access and share resources with each other. Each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday they also host a Virtually Inspired Recovery series. Tuesday and Thursday is a support group and Wednesdays they bring in a speaker to talk about what they do, as well as learn what other organizations are doing and to make connections. NMSAS hosts a Recovery Coach check-in every other week to support Recovery Coaches and share best practices. They offer a Recovery Messaging Training, Ethics trainings, Advocacy trainings and more.

Harm Reduction Saves Lives
If someone is overdosing, their breathing may be very slow or erratic or they may not be breathing at all. They cannot be awakened. Their heart rate will be very slow or may have stopped. Their skin may be blue-gray or pale as well as clammy. Their fingernails or lips may be blue or purple. Their pupils will be tiny pinpoints. You may hear them snoring or you may hear deep gurgling or choking noises. Learn the important steps that could save someone's life.
