White Bison Wellbriety
White Bison is a Native American-operated nonprofit dedicated to creating and sustaining the grassroots Wellbriety Movement. |
|
White Bison's Mending Broken Hearts program provides culturally based healing from grief, loss, and intergenerational trauma, especially for Native peoples from the United States and Canada. Unresolved grief is demonstrated in the many social issues that Native people experience. Traditional healthy cultures have been made sick by the anger, guilt, shame and fear, passed on from generation to generation. This sense of shame and unresolved grief contributes to the behavioral, emotional, physical, and spiritual issues that challenge wellness.
The Great Lakes ROTA-RC will be offering Mending Broken Hearts training. For more information, contact Jennifer Park-Mroch, Ph.D., Health and Well-Being Outreach Specialist, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Division of Extension: jennifer.parkmroch@wisc.edu

Educator, Michigan State University Extension, Children and Youth Institute
|
One of the things we learned from our needs assessment of the region was the need for youth programming and prevention. Our partner, Michigan State University Extension (MSUE), will pivot its focus from adults to youth through 4-H programming. Our newest colleague to the team, Kea Norrell-Aitch, will lead her MSUE 4-H colleagues in providing Youth Mental Health First Aid to adults who serve youth and Teen Mental Health First Aid to high school students, empowering them to support their peers. In addition, MSUE will host local teen summits in rural communities.

Great Lakes ROTA-RC welcomes Dr. Beth Weinstock as the new Ohio advisory board representative. Dr. Weinstock is a physician and mother of four whose eldest son Eli died in March 2021, when he unintentionally ingested fentanyl. In honor of Eli, she and her daughter Olivia Weinstock founded BirdieLight, an organization dedicated to ending the loss of young people due to the dangers of illicit fentanyl. She recently retired from Equitas Health in Columbus, OH, where she cared for individuals infected with HIV and Hepatitis C, to focus more exclusively on BirdieLight. BirdieLight has been featured on multiple podcasts, news outlets, and on The Lead with Jake Tapper on CNN. Her organization has spoken to 1000s of high-school and college students as well as public health and parent groups across the country and in her native Ohio.

|
Reaching Rural is co-sponsored by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the State Justice Institute.
|
Application Deadline:
December 16, 2024, 5pm ET
|
The Reaching Rural Initiative brings together rural practitioners from different professional backgrounds and areas throughout the country to support them as they grow as leaders and advance solutions to address the persistent challenges of substance use in their communities.
Reaching Rural fellows are selected through a competitive application process to participate in the initiative through one of two tracks: either as part of a cross-sector team from their community or as individuals. Throughout the year-long program, fellows learn directly from rural practitioners and each other, receive coaching, and participate in skill-building workshops and peer-to-peer learning experiences. Upon completion of the planning initiative, communities are eligible to apply for funding to implement a project planned during their fellowship.
