Teaching Tips from Experienced TAs

Teaching Mentors facilitate the annual Fall TA Training event. Those selected to be Teaching Mentors have a proven track record of excellence as educators and a strong desire to mentor TAs.

This Week's Teaching Mentor:
Katya Pak is a Doctoral Student in Slavic Languages and Literature.

"Your identity and your role as a TA" with Katya Pak

Being a Russian language TA intersects significantly with both my national identity (as a Korean from Kazakhstan) and my introverted personality. My background allows me to share stories from my home country to demonstrate the diversity of the Russian-speaking world and the broad horizons of where the language can be applied. As an introvert, I’ve also discovered that I’m capable of being much more extroverted in the classroom than I’ve ever expected. In the comfortable class setting, I genuinely enjoy engaging with students and being funny. Sometimes I even find myself doing things I never imagined like singing a song. As long as I feel connected to the students, it doesn’t feel scary anymore.

TA Networks Sanity Hour (Therapy Dog Edition)

This event, for all TAs, features a paws and de-stress theme. Take a break with us at the next Sanity Hour, featuring a very special guest: a certified therapy dog! Unwind, recharge, and get some furry affection—no agenda, just good vibes and community. This event will take place next Thursday, November 20 from 4:00-5:00PM in Van Vleck B115.

Please visit our TA Networks page for more information and to fill out an interest form.

Maximizing Impact: Effective Strategies for Large Classrooms

In this new podcast episode, the L&S Instructional Design Collaborative share effective, research-backed strategies for engaging students and building community in any large classroom.

Free Food Alert!

In our last Learning Forward Newsletter we shared an essential campus resource, Open Seat Food Pantry. While dedicated food assistance programs are vital, we also want to share another resource, Free Food Alert app. This tool sends you instant notifications for leftover food from campus events and meetings that would otherwise be thrown away. It’s an easy way to feed your belly and also help campus reduce food waste.

Ombuds: Confidential and Informal Support for Employees

Because TAs are UW-Madison employees, you have access to services through the Ombuds Office. The Ombuds Office is a safe place where UW-Madison employees can seek guidance regarding workplace concerns at any time, without fear of reprisal, and at no cost to them. Ombuds provide a confidential place to collaboratively explore complaints, clarify issues, and consider options and resources to address their concerns.

Ombuds are impartial and non-aligned, working to promote fairness in the workplace. Learn more or contact the Ombuds.

Learning Forward is brought to you by the L&S TA Training & Support Team.
