October is SAMHSA's Substance Use Prevention Month, an observance dedicated to raising awareness about the critical role of prevention in reducing substance use and its associated risks. Substance Use Prevention Month highlights the importance of community-based efforts, education, and early intervention to prevent substance use, particularly among young people. Through collective action, Substance Use Prevention Month aims to inspire and empower communities to build safe environments and support those at risk of substance misuse.

Mental Illness Awareness Week Oct. 6–12, 2024
 
Millions of Americans are living with a mental health condition — mental illness affects everyone directly or indirectly through family, friends, neighbors or coworkers. During the first week of October (October 6—October 12, 2024), SAMHSA recognizes Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) to raise awareness about mental health and provide support and treatment options for mental health conditions.

Mental Health Stigma in Rural Communities

Dairy farmer and Rural Minds Founder and Chairman, Jeff Winton, will shed light on the unique mental health challenges facing rural America. Drawing from his own experiences growing up on a family dairy farm, Jeff will explore how the pervasive stigma surrounding mental illness continues to affect these tight-knit communities.  

Jeff founded Rural Minds in response to the tragic loss of his nephew to suicide in 2012.
