Poetry & Paying Attention
April is National Poetry Month, and we’re celebrating the occasion by uplifting one of our own L&S creative writing alums, Robert Casper (English, ’93), who is the head of poetry and literature in the Literary Initiatives Office at the Library of Congress. In this conversation with Rob, he reminds us that reading poetry requires you to pay attention to where the words take you and to be open to a remarkable experience that can be deeply meaningful. Farrah Madison took an unusual path to her current gig as the first Black professor and researcher in the Department of Integrative Biology. As part of Chancellor Jennifer L. Mnookin’s week long Investiture celebration, guests looked to the stars during the Discovery Past, Present, and Future: Black Holes, Neutrinos, and Life in our Galaxy symposium. The panel featured Nobel Prize winning astrophysicist UCLA Professor Andrea Ghez as well as Letters & Science professors Francis Halzen and Susanna Widicus Weaver.
