Dry Spell
As climate change accelerates, scientists are studying species that can survive in extremely dry conditions. Professor of Botany Marisa Otegui is part of the new national Water and Life Interface Institute (WALII), a National Science Foundation-funded initiative led by Carnegie Science. Otegui and other scientists from a wide range of fields will study incredibly hardy species like the tardigrade, a microscopic animal that thrives in the absence of water, and seeds of desert plants. Madison-based startup Millennium Geospatial boasts that half of its 30 employees and interns are Letters & Science graduates. Charged with developing GIS maps for utilities looking to expand broadband to rural areas, L&S grads—no matter their major—have exactly what this company needs, according to vice president of engineering Kevin Maes. “It’s the willingness to try to dig through something to figure out a solution for it,” he says.
