[CORRECTION] Last week, we incorrectly wrote that professor Sue Robinson, alum Steven Wang and PhD student Elaine Almeida received an award for a book in which they contributed a chapter. The book which includes a chapter written by them won the award, not those three people individually. See below for an updated Kudos.
An edited book volume with a chapter by SJMC authors wins the Sue DeWine Distinguished and Scholarly Book Award
An edited volume, Public Scholarship in Communication Studies, was selected as the 2024 winner of the Sue DeWine Distinguished Scholarly Book Award from the Applied Communication Division of the National Communication Association! The 2024 book was edited by TJ Billard and Silvio Waisbord. SJMC Professor Sue Robinson, SJMC alum Steven Wang, and SJMC PhD candidate Elaine Almeida authored a chapter in this volume called “Journalism Studies: Centering community in public scholarship through a ‘PRO-flexivity’ approach.”

Professor Jing Wang publishes new article and three essays in Media, Culture & Society
Jing recently published a collaborative article titled “ Global communication as a standpoint: A critical engagement with research, pedagogy, and the profession through a global communication lens” in the Crosscurrents section of Media, Culture & Society. This piece theorizes that a global communication standpoint is characterized by a combination of four aspects that can be embraced across the discipline: contextualization, historical rootedness, attention to power, and engagement with issues of relationality and comparison. Along with this collaborative article, Wang invited four scholars to respond to their article in three companion essays, respectively titled as “ Stand pointing global communication” (Jack Linchuan Qiu, Singapore), “ To internationalize global communication” (Armond R. Towns, US & Aseel Qazzaz, Palestine), and “ A global communications standpoint: What might that mean?” (Usha Raman, India).

One of the hallmarks of our Research M.A. and Ph.D. programs is the opportunity for students to work on and often lead collaborative research projects. Our internationally recognized program prepares students with the quantitative and qualitative research skills necessary to conduct field-leading research and many of our students publish their work throughout their time at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. In spring 2024, several of our students published their research in major communication research journals.
