PhD student Carlos Dávalos Barbabosa selected as a Mellon Public Humanities Fellow
PhD candidate Carlos Dávalos Barbabosa was recently selected as a Mellon Public Humanities Fellow. Each year, the Center for the Humanities invites applications for its Public Humanities Fellowship designed to provide PhD students in the humanities with experience outside of academia. Carlos will be the WORT 88.9 FMCommunity Radio Spanish Language Programming Fellow where he will play an active role in producing the Spanish-language news program, En Nuestro Patio. His position begins this August and runs through Spring 2025. Congratulations, Carlos!
Society of Professional Journalists announce award winners, 12 to J-School students
On April 9, the Society of Professional Journalists Region 6 announced its winners of the 2023 Mark of Excellence Awards and 12 awards were given to J-School students. Winners included the Curb Magazine staff, Rachel Hale, Audrey Thibert, Xinlin (Grace) Jiang, Meryl Hubbard, Sophia Vento, Tyler Katzenberger and The Daily Cardinal staff. Madison Commons interns cover President Biden's visit to Madison Area Technical College
Undergraduate students and interns at Madison Commons, Hallie Claflin and Ruby Rothman, covered President Biden's visit to MATC on Monday, April 8. Biden unveiled a new student loan forgiveness plan and told the crowd this debt relief could be “life changing” for borrowers. Read their full story.

New article co-published by assistant professor Miya Williams Fayne
Anna Julia Cooper fellow Miya Williams Fayne co-published an article with Allissa V. Richardson (USC) titled, "Conquering the COVID-19 Infodemic: How the Digital Black Press Battled Racialized Misinformation in 2020" in Digital Journalism. In it, they find that digital Black press publications attempted to dispel racialized myths by: (1) using Black celebrity updates as a hook for hard news; (2) removing unfactual information from social media comments, (3) reporting on the pandemic’s effects on Black life; (4) providing culturally specific tips for staying healthy; and (5) crafting spaces for Black news audiences to ask Black medical officials questions. Camila Trimberger-Ruiz, a senior on the reporting track with a certificate in Chicane/Latine Studies. Camila is the WORT FM Music Intern, where she organizes the physical library, increases local music coverage, interviews current music hosts, assists in station promotion, and more.
