Jianing Li successfully defends dissertation

Congratulations to Jianing Li on successfully defending her dissertation! Jianing will begin as an Assistant Professor at the University of South Florida in the fall. Her advisor, Mike Wagner, wrote in a tweet: Dr. Jianing Li in the house! One of the great pleasures of my career has been learning from Jianing as her advisor and collaborator. Congratulations on a truly wonderful dissertation. Special thanks to her committee Dhavan Shah, Kathy Cramer, Michael Xenos, Sijia Yang and Chris Cascio.

PhD candidate Kruthika Kamath selected for TTU's PhDigital Bootcamp

Congratulations to PhD candidate Kruthika Kamath on being selected for this year's PhDigital Bootcamp by Texas Tech University. The PhDigital Online program prepares mass communication faculty to lead curriculum innovation in a digital product context. The program is offered online, scheduled June 3-July 15 and includes 23 doctoral students and faculty from across the country. Read more.

Alex Koo successfully completes preliminary exams

From Sue Robinson: Please congratulate Alex Koo for passing his preliminary examinations! He now begins a dissertation about the role that the Hong Kong press plays in creating a Hong Kong identity. Yay, Alex, on this huge milestone!

Emerging Scholars Speaker Series: Anita Varma - April 28

From Karyn Riddle: A reminder that Assistant Professor Anita Varma from the University of Texas at Austin will be giving this semester’s Emerging Scholars Speaker Series talk on Thursday, April 28. This hybrid talk will be from 3:00-4:30 p.m. in the Nafziger room. We on the Inclusion Committee are so excited to hear her present on the topics of journalism, public engagement, and her Solidarity Journalism Initiative. Register for the virtual option.

Center for Journalism Ethics Conference: April 29

The Center for Journalism Ethics' conference "Centering Equity: Journalism, Ethics and a Just Future" will take place Friday, April 29 at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery. The event is free and open to the public. Learn more and register.

Alumni Awards Ceremony: April 29

The Alumni Awards Ceremony will take place Friday, April 29 at the Gordon Commons Dining and Events Center Symphony Room from 7:00-9:00 p.m. The event will honor recipients of our alumni awards, including the Nafziger, Nelson, Dunwoody and Distinguished Service Awards, as well as our Baughman Senior Achievement Award winners and graduate student teaching and leadership awards. Register here.

SJMC Graduation Celebration: May 13

Our May Graduation Celebration will take place in person at the Discovery Building (330 N Orchard St) in the H.F. DeLuca Forum and via livestream on Friday, May 13 at 12PM Central. No registration or tickets are required. If you are graduating and want to participate, submit this form by Friday, April 29.
