Assistant professor Jing Wang selected for the First Book Workshop
Jing was selected for the prestigious UW-Madison Center for the Humanities' First Book Workshop, which provides both scholarly and collegial support for junior faculty members revising their first academic book. Jing's in-progress manuscript, "We Have Never Been Silent: Lowkey Media and Resilient Islamic Public in China," is currently under contract with Columbia University Press and examines Chinese Muslims’ media practices from print media, such as novels and magazines, broadcast media like TV dramas and films, and digital media such as Chinese-language Islamic websites, blogs, social media, and podcasts. The book speaks to an interdisciplinary audience of scholars and students in the fields of global media and communication studies, anthropology of Islam, China studies, and critical studies of race, ethnicity, and gender. Congratulations, Jing!
Assistant Professor Jing Wang leads teach-in at the University of Chicago
On Tuesday, Jing spoke at a public teach-in event at the University of Chicago about her essay, " What Can White Paper Do?" Her talk explored how protesters used blank white paper to express their voices during the #A4Revolution while remaining in the shadows of Chinese state censorship and surveillance. During the workshop, participants made zines together and reflected upon the significance of resistance and the potential for solidarity. Congratulations, Jing!
