Undergrad student Xinlin (Grace) Jiang wins 2023 Eric Sevareid Award

Grace won first prize in the Individual Multimedia Storytelling – News category of the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association 2023 Eric Sevareid Awards for her project "Asian Hate in Madison." The project explores Asian hate in the Madison area based on three unprovoked attacks on Asian students near the UW-Madison campus through written pieces, video, audio and graphic design elements. Congratulations, Grace!

New paper published in the Journal of Advertising Research

Professor Kate Christy, alum Estelle Mi (PhD '20), and PhD candidates Ran Tao and Linqi Lu published a new paper in the Journal of Advertising Research. The paper, titled "Disruptive versus Nondisruptive Advertising in Online Streaming Video Services: How Does Advertisement Placement Affect Consumer Perceptions and Ad Effectiveness?" examines the effects of ad placement in online video streaming with an emphasis on examining the impact of disruptive advertising (advertisements that appear mid-sentence or scene in a video). Professor and Chair of Internet Use and Society in the Department of Communication and Media Research at the University of Zurich, Eszter Hargittai will give a talk about "Connected Isolation: Digital Privilege in Unsettled Times." The session will be held in the Nafziger Conference Room or virtually via Zoom from 2:30–4 p.m. CT.

April 21: Ivan L. Preston Research Colloquium with Michael McDevitt

Professor in the Journalism Department at the University of Colorado Boulder, Michael McDevitt will present about "The Attraction of Authoritarianism" Political Socialization in an Era of Extreme Discontent." The event will be held in the McLeod Seminar Room or virtually via Zoom from 10:30 a.m. – Noon CT.

April 28: Alumni Awards Celebration

Please join us for an evening honoring our 2023 award winners. Celebrate the accomplishments of alumni and students receiving awards including the Distinguished Service Award, Ralph O. Nafziger Award, Harold L. Nelson Award, Sharon Dunwoody Award, Graduate Student Awards and James L. Baughman Senior Achievement Awards.
