BOV member Lee Newman becomes new president of GSD&M

GSD&M announced this week that it had hired J-School BOV member Lee Newman as their new president. Lee spent 8 years as CEO of MullenLowe U.S. and during his career, has worked on big-name clients such as Whole Foods, Ulta Beauty, Walt Disney World, Procter & Gamble and BMW. Congratulations, Lee!

Professor Mike Wagner featured at Platforms, Power, and Democracy conference

Mike traveled to Montreal, Quebec, Canada this week to join the Platforms, Power, and Democracy conference at McGill University. Mike was a part of a fireside chat focused on better understanding the power and influence that platforms have on society and what can be done to better govern the role they play in shaping our democracy.

Professional M.A. student Lindsay Giovannone's story featured in Inside UW

Lindsay's Madison Commons story, "Kristen Roman: From UW–Madison volleyball standout to chief of campus police," was featured this week in the UW-Madison faculty and staff newsletter, Inside UW. The story profiles UW-Madison's chief of police and her successful volleyball career while a student at UW-Madison. Read the full story.

Ph.D. student Aman Abhishek's article published in Jewish Current

Aman, currently based in Jerusalem as a George H Mosse Fellow, published an article titled "Amid a Settler Onslaught, Protective Presence Activism Falters" in Jewish Currents based on his fieldwork in the West Bank studying how activists and human rights organizations use digital technologies to document state violence. Madison Commons has banner day for web traffic

On Thursday, Nov. 30, Madison Commons had its biggest day of traffic in years. A recent story about cannabis legislation in Wisconsin was picked up by NewsBreak and Lindsay Giovannone's profile of the UW Police chief was featured in Inside UW led to much higher-than-normal web traffic. Congratulations to the team at Madison Commons!

Curb Magazine Students Place Third in Disability Reporting Competition

Three recent J-School graduates placed third in the Gary Corcoran Student Prize for Excellence in Reporting on Disability from the National Center on Disability and Journalism for their Curb article, "The Only Way Forward is Together."

Dec. 11: MCRC Health Communication Research Symposium

Join the MCRC on Monday, December 11 from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. in the Nafziger Conference Room (5055 Vilas) for their Health Communication Research Symposium. Hear from 13 scholars about their research in this fascinating area. There will be several themed panels throughout the day and lunch will be served.
  • 9–10:15 a.m. – Health Media: News, Broadcasting and Health Communication
  • 10:30 a.m.–noon – Health Technology: Social Media, Mental Processing, and Well-Being
  • Noon–12:45 p.m. – Lunch
  • 12:45–2 p.m. – Digital Therapeutics: Trace Data, Machine Learning, and Virtual Reality in eHealth

Dec. 13: J-School Winter Graduation Celebration

Join us in celebrating our graduating undergraduate and graduate students on Wednesday, December 13 from 11 a.m.–noon in the Nafziger Conference Room (5055 Vilas). The event will include light refreshments, photo opportunities for graduates, brief remarks from director Katy Culver and individual student recognition.
