Associate professor Lindsay Palmer selected as 2023-23 Fellow for the Institute for Research in the Humanities

Lindsay was selected as a 2023-24 Fellow for the Institute for Research in the Humanities in the College of Letters & Sciences. The competitive fellowships are awarded across the humanities, at all faculty ranks and to independent scholars, based on the significance of proposed research, the record and potential of applicants, and the promise of interdisciplinary engagement in IRH's intellectual community. Lindsay will also be off from teaching and service in fall 2024 to work on her book, Defending Our Colleagues: The Committee to Protect Journalists and Global Press Freedom, 1981-2021. Congratulations, Lindsay!

Ph.D. student Zhi-Xiong (Alex) Koo passes dissertation defense

Zhi-Xiong (Alex) Koo successfully defended his dissertation today, December 8. Titled, "Examining the Blue Ribbons: Pro-Regime Identity Discourses, Propaganda, and Mobilization of Hong Kong's Pro-Establishment Camp," his dissertation explores an under-studied group of pro-China activists in Hong Kong. Alex will start a tenure-track job at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in January 2024. A special thank you to Alex's committee and advisers! Congratulations, Alex!

Did you know that CraftBeer.com's 2020 Greatest American Beer Bar is owned by a J-School alum? Garth Beyer opened Garth's Brew Bar in December 2019 which, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, has become a Monroe Street community staple. Read more about Garth and find out which professor pushed him to explore his passion for craft beer.

Dec. 11: MCRC Health Communication Research Symposium

Join the MCRC on Monday, December 11 from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. in the Nafziger Conference Room (5055 Vilas) for their Health Communication Research Symposium. Hear from 13 scholars about their research in this fascinating area. There will be several themed panels throughout the day and lunch will be served.
  • 9–10:15 a.m. – Health Media: News, Broadcasting and Health Communication
  • 10:30 a.m.–noon – Health Technology: Social Media, Mental Processing, and Well-Being
  • Noon–12:45 p.m. – Lunch
  • 12:45–2 p.m. – Digital Therapeutics: Trace Data, Machine Learning, and Virtual Reality in eHealth

Dec. 13: J-School Winter Graduation Celebration

Join us in celebrating our graduating undergraduate and graduate students on Wednesday, December 13 from 11 a.m.–noon in the Nafziger Conference Room (5055 Vilas). The event will include light refreshments, photo opportunities for graduates, brief remarks from director Katy Culver and individual student recognition.
