Associate professor Kathryn McGarr awarded Vilas Associates Award
Kathryn received the Vilas Associates Award to work on the project "Public and Private Criticism of Israel Among Anglo-American Intellectuals, 1965–1975," which is a chapter of a larger planned work, Public Intellectuals and U.S. Foreign Policy: A Transatlantic History. The Vilas Associates Award recognizes new and ongoing research of the highest quality and significance. Kathryn will receive research salary support for summer 2025 and 2026. Congratulations, Kathryn!

Professor Sue Robinson leads two community-based learning courses
This semester, Sue is putting the Wisconsin Idea into practice and leading two community-based learning courses, J475: Practicing Communication for Social Change and a directed study course aimed at developing a solutions-oriented course.
In J475 (left picture), students are working with four community partners, Root 2 Rise, GSafe, Bay View Community Foundation and Black Girl Magic to teach teens storytelling skills and work on strategic communication, fundraising, podcasting and other work in different communities.
In her directed study course, Sue and her eight students took a field trip to a Linden Cohousing event for people seeking affordable housing solutions (right picture) where SJMC senior Maeghan Chase spoke to the Madison Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and Dane County Supervisor Heidi Wegleitner about their project.

Student Spotlight: Elisabeth Charney
Elisabeth Charney is a senior studying strategic communication. As an Innovative Strategy intern at The Evoke Agency, Elisabeth brings creativity to every project. Her responsibilities include supporting company growth through product research, business proposals, SOP development, branding, copywriting, and more. She has also written advertorials for the Tease and assisted in writing for Forbes Business Council and Fast Company. As Elisabeth looks toward the future, she envisions working in a collaborative, creative position where she can build her skills in advertising and branding.

Feb. 17: Emerging Scholars Speaker Series with Denetra Walker
Save the date for the second and final talk in our 2025 Emerging Scholars Lecture Series on Monday, February 17 from noon–1:45 p.m. in the Nafziger room (5055 Vilas). Assistant Professor at the University of Georgia, Denetra Walker will present her talk, "'I Try to use my Little Power': The Roles and Multi-Consciousness of Black Journalists and their Lens of Gatekeeping Blackness." Lunch will be from noon–12:30 p.m. with the talk starting promptly at 12:30 p.m. Please RSVP by Thursday, Feb. 13 to secure your meal. You may still attend the talk if you do not RSVP.
Feb. 24: MCRC Symposium featuring Martín Echeverría
Join the MCRC in the Nafziger Room on Monday, Feb. 24 from noon–2 p.m. for a discussion about "The Latin Americanization of U.S. Politics" featuring Mexican scholar and the Head of the Center for Political Communication Studies at Menemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, Martín Echeverría. He will be joined in discussion by Rubén Arnoldo González, a journalist and scholar at the Institute of Government Sciences and Strategic Development in Mexico, and Leonor Hidalgo-Ciro and Elohim Monard, Ph.D. students at SJMC. Lunch will be served before the start of the symposium.
Mar. 7: Communication Crossroads Conference
Join us on Friday, March 7 from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. for the 2025 Communications Crossroads Conference. Run by graduate students for graduate students, this annual conference provides a friendly environment to practice presenting research, and the opportunity to gain feedback from faculty and peers.
