Group of J-School researchers publish article in Journalism Practice

Recent Ph.D. grad Matt Minich, recent M.A. grad Jessica Needle, Ph.D. student Luis Loya and director Katy Culver published an article titled "A Skills-driven Approach to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Journalism Curricula" in Journalism Practice. In the paper, the group conducted interviews with media professionals and professors recognized for their DEI work to identify changes that may be made to communication skills course curriculum to better prepare journalists for ethical and less harmful reporting. In Memoriam: Jack McLeod, 1930–2024

Jack McLeod, Maier-Bascom Professor Emeritus and leader in political communication research, died January 28, 2024, at Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg, Wisconsin. He was 93.

Jack was considered an icon in the field and his impact on political communication research was far-reaching. Beyond his scholarship, Jack was a humble and kind mentor, colleague and friend and is admired around the world for his character and generosity. Through his scholarship, kindness, generosity and wit, Jack McLeod has left a permanent imprint on the field, in the halls of Vilas and on his mentees around the world.

Feb. 16: "Jim: The James Foley Story" Film Screening and Q&A

The J-School and the Center for Journalism Ethics are excited to welcome the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation to campus on Friday, Feb. 16 for a screening of "Jim: The James Foley Story" and a discussion of journalist safety. All are welcome to attend this sure-to-be impactful event.

Feb. 19: Preston Colloquium with Rebekah Nagler

Associate professor at the University of Minnesota Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication Rebekah Nagler will present her talk "Confronting the perennial challenge of conflicting health information" on Monday, Feb. 19 in the Nafziger Room (5055 Vilas Hall). Lunch will be provided.

Feb. 22: Ralph O. & Monona H. Nafziger Lecture Series: Resiliency in Today's Fast-Paced Sports Media with Andy Katz

The J-School is excited to welcome UW alum and BOV member Andy Katz on Thursday, Feb. 22 for a presentation about dealing with and thriving from adversity in the world of sports media. Andy Katz is a digital reporter, analyst and host for NCAA and Big Ten Network. Light refreshments will be provided. Mark your calendars – you don't want to miss this event!
