PhD student Heysung Lee accepts postdoc position at Korea University

Heysung recently accepted a postdoc position at the Institute for Comparative Governance at Korea University in Seoul. She will start her new position on February 17. Congratulations, Heysung!

Professor Mike Wagner travels to Greenfield, WI for presentation

As part of Badger Talks, Mike traveled to Clement Manor Retirement Community in Greenfield, WI this week to give a talk about why the political divide is far more nuanced than the typical “red state-blue state” narratives in the news.

CCCR Executive Administrative Director Nathan Kalmoe offers his perspective on political violence

Nathan was featured as one of nine experts in Just Security's article, "Nine Experts on the Impact of President Trump’s Pardons and Commutations for January 6 Offenders." He warns about the dangerous precedent set by the Jan. 6 pardons and its implications on our democracy in the future. Read the full article.

Alumni Spotlight: Steve Raymer (BA'67, MA'71)

In October 2024, photojournalist, author, and educator Steve donated his archive to the Wisconsin Historical Society, including thousands of photographs from his global assignments. A former National Geographic Magazine staff photographer and senior editor, Steve documented pivotal global events, including famines, wars, and political shifts. Steve’s connection to UW–Madison runs deep, as he credits the SJMC for shaping his career. His courageous photojournalism will continue to inspire and motivate students, showing them the power of storytelling through photography. Read more about his incredible career.

Feb. 17: Emerging Scholars Speaker Series with Denetra Walker

Save the date for the second and final talk in our 2025 Emerging Scholars Lecture Series on Monday, February 17 from noon–1:45 p.m. in the Nafziger room (5055 Vilas). Assistant Professor at the University of Georgia, Denetra Walker will present her talk, "'I Try to use my Little Power': The Roles and Multi-Consciousness of Black Journalists and their Lens of Gatekeeping Blackness." Lunch will be from noon–12:30 p.m. with the talk starting promptly at 12:30 p.m. Please RSVP by Thursday, Feb. 13 to secure your meal. You may still attend the talk if you do not RSVP.

Mar. 7: Communication Crossroads Conference

Join us on Friday, March 7 from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. for the 2025 Communications Crossroads Conference. Run by graduate students for graduate students, this annual conference provides a friendly environment to practice presenting research, and the opportunity to gain feedback from faculty and peers.
