Article in the Journal of Communication

Professor Karyn Riddle has published a new research article in Journal of Communication with Professor Nicole Martins at Indiana University. In this article ("A content analysis of American primetime television: A 20-year update of the National Television Violence Studies”), Riddle and Martins analyze the prevalence and context of violence on primetime cable and broadcast television. An analysis of 765 television programs and movies suggests the proportion of programs with at least one act of violence has increased only slightly in the past 20 years. On the other hand, the number of programs saturated with heavy amounts of violence has experienced a significant increase. Consistent with prior studies of this nature, anti-violence themes conveying the real-life harms and dangers of violence are rare. Read the article.
