Thank you to all who made Crossroads 2024 a success

On behalf of the planning committee, we extend our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for making this year’s Crossroads Conference an unforgettable experience!

We want to acknowledge Mike and Lindsey for their guidance for leading our planning committee on conference presentations, as well as Rowan, Sterling, Katy, Jenni, and Kara for their unwavering support through the process.

A special thank you to the Research Committee for their efforts in organizing the paper call and managing the presentation process.

Center for Journalism Ethics announces 2024 Anthony Shadid Award winners

This Tuesday, the Center for Journalism Ethics announced that a team of three NBC News reporters won the 2024 Anthony Shadid Award for Journalism Ethics for their work exposing America’s failed death notification system. Jon Schuppe,, Mike Hixenbaugh, and Rich Shapiro showed how authorities in Hinds County, Mississippi, were unceremoniously burying the bodies of missing people without notifying the loved ones still searching for them. Thanks to Kathryn McGarr for chairing this year’s selection committee and Krista Eastman for her leadership in administering the awards, which netted a record number of nominations this year. 
 

Publications

Assistant Professor Jing Wang publishes chapter in new book about the history of Muslim women writers in China

In this book chapter titled "Affective Matrivocality and Women’s Voices: A History of Muslim Women Writers in China," Wang offers a historical review of Chinese Muslim women’s changing status in social and religious lives. The chapter traces the active participation of Chinese Muslim women in the public sphere from the early twentieth century until the present day, particularly through new modes of education, mass media, and literature. The chapter was published in the book "Matrilineal, Matriarchal, and Matrifocal Islam: The World of Women-Centric Islam."

Student Spotlight: Meryl Hubbard

Meryl Hubbard is a senior double-tracking in strategic communication and reporting. After interning at Channel 3000 last summer, Meryl knew she wanted to continue to share stories about the downtown Madison community and was looking for creative ways to continue gaining professional experience while in school. With the help and support of her News Director at Channel 3000 as well as teaching faculty members Adam Schrager and Pat Hastings, Meryl created The Badger Beat, which provides local news to Badgers via social media. Be sure to follow @badger_beat to keep up on the latest Badger news!

Celebrating International Women's Day and Women's History Month

Happy International Women's Day! Follow along all March long as we celebrate Women's History Month by highlighting some of our amazing J-School women in research! This week, we are excited to feature Kruthika Kamath, a Ph.D. student studying social movements, women's studies, digital media and news coverage, particularly examining patterns of care and acknowledgment in social media discourse.

April 5: 2024 CJE Conference – Journalism Ethics and the AI Challenge

The Center for Journalism Ethics is hosting its annual conference on Friday, April 5 online and in-person at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery (330 N. Orchard St.). Called “Journalism Ethics & the AI Challenge,” the conference will bring together news media professionals, media innovators, academics, students and the public to address the ethical dilemmas that AI poses to the practice of journalism. Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Julia Angwin will deliver a keynote address on the challenges of covering AI. Registration is now open and this event is free and open to the public.
