Two students win History Department prizes for J560 papers
Undergraduate student
Dana Brandt and recent graduate Isabella Cerda were awarded prizes from the History Department for their papers from Professor
Kathryn McGarr's J560 class. Dana won the William F. Allen Prize and $200 for her piece titled, "Beyond “Closing Ranks”: A Nuanced look at the Black Press’s Editorial Coverage During World War I in the Pages of the Chicago Defender." Isabella wonder the Curti Prize and $200 for her work titled "Radical Student Press at UW-Madison: An Analysis of the Black Voice From 1971-1973." Congratulations, Dana and Isabella!

May 9: SJMC Inclusion Town Hall
All undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff are invited for this evaluation of our diversity, equity and inclusion work during 2022 and 2023. We will also collectively plan our SJMC DEI Agenda for 2023-2024 during this event. This is important work we are committed to doing transparently and collaboratively, understanding that inclusive goals must be widely committed at all levels of our community. The event is from Noon–2 p.m. and lunch will be served but we kindly request you

May 12: SJMC Graduation Celebration
Join us at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery from Noon–2 p.m. for our SJMC Graduation Celebration! Undergraduate and graduate students will be individually recognized for their hard work and hear from special guest speaker Jim Rome! The event is free and no tickets are required. May 17: Center for Journalism Ethics' Anthony Shadid Award for Journalism Ethics Ceremony
Please join the Center for Journalism Ethics, as well as leading journalists and news organizations, in honoring the winner of the 2023 Anthony Shadid Award for Journalism Ethics. The Shadid Award is presented in memory of Anthony Shadid ’90, a UW–Madison journalism alum and former board member of the Center for Journalism Ethics. A two-time recipient of the Pulitzer Prize, Shadid reported on the Middle East for the Washington Post and New York Times and remains one of the most admired international correspondents of our time. This event will be held at the University Club of New York in New York City from 6:30–9 p.m. EST.
