Emeritus distinguished teaching faculty member Pat Hastings announced as 2025 Silver Circle inductee at 66th Annual Chicago/Midwest Emmy Awards

This past Saturday at the 66th Annual Chicago/Midwest Emmy Awards, emeritus distinguished teaching faculty member Pat Hastings was announced as a 2025 Silver Circle inductee. The Silver Circle honors those who have made significant and impactful contributions to the television industry for 25 years or more. We are so thrilled for Pat and this incredible recognition of her passion and dedication to educating the next generation of journalists. Watch the announcement.

WSUM Director of Radio Kelsey Brannan named WBA's YP of the Month

Kelsey was recently selected as the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association's Young Professional of the Month. The designation seeks to recognize young broadcasters who have made a significant impact on their stations and communities. As YP of the Month, Kelsey will be highlighted in the WBA's YP Newsletter and will be in the running for "YP of the Year." The YP of the Year announcement will be made next spring. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor, Kelsey!

CCCR launches Civic Shift YouTube channel

This week, professor Mike Wagner and Center for Communication and Civic Renewal Executive Administrative Director Nathan Kalmoe launched a new CCCR YouTube channel called Civic Shift. With the new channel, they hope to expand their public outreach. They posted their pilot episode interviewing Wisconsin election admins and other experts on how votes are counted today. Recent alum Jake Rome (BA'23) wins an Emmy at the 66th Annual Chicago/Midwest Emmy Awards

Jake, as part of the Uniquely Wisconsin team, won an Emmy at the 66th Annual Chicago/Midwest Emmy Awards as a Contributing Producer for their project “Field of Dreams: AAGPBL 80th Reunion” in the Nostalgia - Long & Short Form Content category. Their film tells the story of the Kenosha Comets, one of the four original All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) teams. Congratulations, Jake!

Professor Mike Wagner has speaks to multiple news outlets about the election

Mike had another unsurprisingly busy week speaking to multiple news outlets about the 2024 election leading many to wonder if he ever sleeps. Congratulations, Mike, on all of your media relations efforts!

  • Oct. 31: Science story about challenges facing misinformation researchers
  • Nov. 1: WORT, "US Elections: Showdown in Wisconsin" documentary airing in Germany about Wisconsin politics (Mike's segment appears at 13:50), CBC's About That YouTube series about newspaper endorsements
  • Nov. 3: Cap Times op-ed written with PhD student Jess Maki about what Wisconsin voters want from their government

Nov. 15: Fall BOV Meeting

BOV members will join several SJMC faculty and staff members for their bi-annual meeting on Friday, November 10 from 8 a.m.–3 p.m. The group will discuss the current state of the school and visions for its future.

Nov. 18: Ivan L. Preston Research Colloquium with Neil Lewis Jr.

Neil Lewis Jr., Associate Professor in the Department of Communication, Division of General Internal Medicine and Graduate Field of Psychology at Cornell University, will present his research, "Revisiting the Wisconsin Idea: Publicly Engaged Research in the 21st Century." The presentation will be held in the Nafziger Room (5055 Vilas) at from noon-2 p.m. Lunch will be served at noon prior to the talk.
