Professor Sue Robinson, alum Steven Wang and PhD student Elaine Almeida win the Sue DeWine Distinguished and Scholarly Book Award

Sue and Elaine recently received the Sue DeWine Distinguished and Scholarly Book Award from the Applied Communication Division of the National Communication Association for their edited volume, "Public Scholarship in Communication Studies." The 2024 book was edited by TJ Billard and Silvio Waisbord. Professor Sue Robinson, alum Steven Wang, and PhD student Elaine Almeida authored a chapter in this volume called “Journalism Studies: Centering community in public scholarship through a ‘PRO-flexivity’ approach.” Congratulations, Sue, Steven and Elaine!

Alum Audrey Thibert (BA'24) selected for 2024-2025 RNS/IA Religion Journalism Fellowship

Audrey was recently accepted to the 2024-2025 Religion News Service (RNS)/Interfaith America (IA) Religion Journalism Fellowship Program. The fellowship aims to develop future religion news journalists by deepening their understanding of religious expression in individual lives and diverse communities. Congratulations, Audrey!

Director Katy Culver featured in L&S article

Katy was recently featured in a College of Letters & Science article titled "6 Ways Faculty Prepare for a New Semester." For Katy, she revisits bookmarked podcasts about Supreme Court decisions and attempts to get into the minds of her 20-year-old students and their media diets. Read the full article.

Professor Mike Wagner featured twice in Science

Mike spoke to Science about his work studying the collaboration between Facebook and a number of academics studying the 2020 presidential election. He was also quoted in a Science editorial about the same subject.

Mike gave a talk about misinformation and democracy at the LaCrosse Public Library on Sept. 15 Mike also spoke to WAOW TV in Wausau about a ballot referendum in Wisconsin.

Marin Rosen is a junior with concentrations in reporting and strategic communication. Marin is currently interning for News 3 Now / Channel 3000 and running the Badger Beat, a social media platform aimed at making news more relatable and accessible to students.

Join the Morgridge Center on Tuesday, October 15 from 5:30–8 p.m. for a panel featuring SJMC professor Hernando Rojas. The panel will focus on the role of higher education in supporting democracy and how our institutions can prepare students to be informed and engaged citizens.
